Christine should not be faulted for the vocal performance on Isn't it Midnight. She sang the song straight, but Buckingham clearly sped up her voice so that it becomes an ersatz voice.
Her vocal of the same song in the Tango video a few months later shows she could belt it with the same control and conviction she had 10--or 15--years earlier.
If LB's contention is the entire band was at its worst during that recording, how come Christine's songs and her approach to them essentially MAKE the record? LB has often said he prefers Tango to Mirage as a statement of the band's music. But then he also talks about how torturous it was to make Tango. An interviewer needs to sit him down and get him to clarify his views definitively. That would require persistence and follow-up articulation of his answers.
Oh--and The Dance included four new songs. Not earth-shattering, but still a fistful of good music. The writer seems to be warping facts to fit his thesis.
