I think sadly that because Stevie has tended not to have a clear final vision of what her songs should sound like she has been at the mercy of producers who turned her music into what *they* thought it should be. Listening to demos vs final versions it seems like Tom Petty was one of the best at translating her songs pretty closely from her demos. And honestly, I don't know if left to her own devices *she's* the best judge anymore of what her music should end up sounding like. She did have a lot of input on IYD if you judge by the documentary (a bit of a risky assumption) so you can't blame all that on Dave. He seemed to acquiesce mostly to whatever SHE wanted, which appears to be a big part of why she likes to work with him.
