Stevie has co-written quite a lot with others in the past, although maybe not as much on one album as she did on IYD. Co-writing is not bad. The only question is whether it changes the nature of the songs she became famous for. It is common for others to co-write, but is there something happening that is a shift for
Stevie?
In a sense, I think
No Spoken Word sounds like more of a "Stevie" song than some of them on IYD. But I like all of the IYD songs except for
Cheaper Than Free, New
Orleans and the title track. So, I have no problem with her co-writing with Dave, although a song like
Everybody Loves You is a little more straightforward than I'm accustomed to for her, lyric wise. The same was true of
Say You Will (the single) though, which I always thought of as being linear for Stevie, but she did that on purpose, to fill in for Christine.
I think it's not good to sound too much like Christine, lyric-wise, on her own albums.
