I don't see how explaining the song would make it more palatable to anyone wanting to take political offense. And it doesn't make it less narcissistic either. In fact, giving it an intro may make it sound like it's more about herself than if she just started singing. Regarding content and context, the words of the song are still what they are, even if Stevie talks about Walter Reed first.
Frankly, I think people read the song ambiguously. To me, I hear condemnation, 'about what is righteous' and a reflection on hypocrisy that kills. For me the "Mmmmm" is a judgment, but I don't think everyone hears that.
I think that people on both sides can feel the song is about what
they believe, sans introduction. And those who aren't listening with partisan ears will just think that it's in support of the troops, which both sides can get behind.
