I don't think their versions are mutually exclusive. I mean, Lindsey's position might not have been static, but evolving instead.
I also think that they
all thought if they just gave her a little time off, let her breathe, that she would change her mind and come back. And she did. It just took a few more years than they believed it would.
But I could see Lindsey trying to convince her to stay, then seeing that it might backfire if he pushed too hard and supporting her "survival move" and then when she didn't return after all, he was upset.
