But I think the whole "you say you want your freedom" indicates it's a woman talking about a man who wants out of the relationship so that he can play the field and the whole "players only love you when they're playing" goes into that. It's like Silver Springs. That also sounds like the man left the woman. I think these songs are inspired by Stevie and Lindsey but not a literal reflection of what really transpired in their relationship.
Of course, I think the relationship had a lot of different breaks and endings, so it wasn't always the same person leaving.
