I agree that it's not a hopeful song at all. I think the heartbeat driving you mad as you remember what you had and what you lost is just as "bitter" as Go Your Own Way.
But I think the whole "you say you want your freedom" indicates it's a woman talking about a man who wants out of the relationship so that he can play the field and the whole "players only love you when they're playing" goes into that. It's like
Silver Springs. That also sounds like the man left the woman. I think these songs are inspired by Stevie and Lindsey but not a literal reflection of what really transpired in their relationship.
Of course, I think the relationship had a lot of different breaks and endings, so it wasn't always the same person leaving.
