You can love someone without being in love with them. I'm as big of a BN person as anyone, but I don't think there's anything bizarre about telling someone you've known for nearly half a century that you love them (although, it IS especially touching to hear it between the two of them given their roller-coaster history) so I don't think that it would require some grand explanation to his kids. You love lots of people in life, not just people that you date/marry. It's not as if Lindsey's children don't know Stevie and know they've been in a band together forever and I'm sure they probably also know they used to date. I just don't think it would be confusing - she's not a stranger, ya know?
I think they have fun up there messing with each other and being sentimental, and I think there's real love/adoration/annoyance/whatever other feelings behind it - I don't think it's all for show. But MOST of the stuff they do (there are some exceptions - neck kiss? kind of odd), while sweet and cute and all that jazz, I don't find to be totally out-of-line or cause for any sort of concern for his family. But I think I've said before that I'm an inherently emotional/touchy-feely person so maybe to others some of that seems totally weird. Or maybe I'm just becoming immune to the ridiculousness of Stevie & Lindsey's dynamic.
