ITA agree about the early 80s lyrics being more substantive than the later 80s (as a rule, certainly not without exception). I find the following songs off of RAL especially grating: Sister Honey, Imperial Hotel, and THE NIGHTMARE (wretched - arguably one of her worst!).

Ohhh nooo, Nancy! I actually think "The Nightmare" is Stevie's most wildly inventive & unfettered & most uncanny song of all time! It's primordial. I think Stevie's entire essence -- all that windswept Bronte stuff -- is wrapped up inside this one song. I find it all absolutely wrenching, like being careened across the moors in "Wuthering Heights" at rocket speed. Lyrically, it seems to contain hints of the abyss, & Stevie's vocals just kick butt. I love love love "The Nightmare."
