No, Christine didn't have that attachment any longer. But I think John might have been "going at it". He says he still cried every time he heard Songbird, knowing that it is about him and it's being sung by a person that you loved and still love.
I am sure she did not strangle him and he did not throw Christine over the bonnet of a car when she decided to leave the band in 1998, but he seemed pretty moody about it. When she said (for IMT promotion) that she occasionally talked to Stevie and Mick, but indicated that some of them were still miffed about her leaving, I think John was one of the ones miffed and he was hurt that she was so unhappy during The Dance. When they reconvened for The Dance Stevie said that John was still drinking and Lindsey later said that John was still uptight being around Christine (which is one reason he declared that everyone was freed by her absence somehow).
So, I don't think Lindsey and Stevie were the only ones with emotional bonds that were hard to break.
Of course, I am sure that the 1987 parting hurt as much as a divorce for both Lindsey and Stevie. That's why she said they screamed things at each other, things that they'd held back for 10 years, just in case they might still get back together. Things that they finally let go in rage and pain. I think it was hard.
But I also think it would be pretty hard for John to keep going if Mick up and left the band too. So . . .
