I think the stark simplicity and instrumentation of "Soldier's Angel" is incredibly effective and moving. It's supposed to be simple, direct, brutal and in-your-face; not a beautiful ballad awash with ethereal imagery and harps. And only a female singer with the musical instinct and intellect of Stevie could convey such devastation and anger without resorting to obvious hystrionics. Johnny Cash was good at doing this; I could totally picture him singing this song on one of his
American Recordings albums.
