I don't know a lot about computers but I know how you feel about going to find something and not being able to find it.It really bugged me for a few days so I decided to go to search from the start menu and then I searched for one of my media files. I think I just put in the name of a song that I uploaded from one of my CD's. Everything ended up still being there it was just defaulted to the main desktop. What a relief!

Was it similar to what happened to me?
I was just thinking about it because this evening I did system maintanence and my Daughter couldn't find a song she uploaded. He he.
I found it for her and showed her what happened and how to get her desktop stuff back where she had it.
