It's also very hard for kids to care about themselves and their future when they're coming from a household such as that, and it happens much more often than it should.

My husband is a public school teacher and coach. One evening after practice, one of his kids missed the activity bus and called home for a ride. His mom, at home, refused to go pick him up. This kid was preparing to walk 5+ miles home along a four lane highway when my husband ran into him in the parking lot and gave him a ride. Another student told my husband that his parents wouldn't be attending back to school night, where the parents have one-on-one time with all of their childs teachers to discuss their progress, because Drew Carey was on tv at the same time. Nice messages from the parents as to what's important in life, eh?
