Apples and oranges. The Eagles do a different style of music. They're better players on the whole, as a group, but the members of FM are better individually, I think. The Eagles are better overall. Their song catalog's a bit deeper than the Mac, but they use other songwriters to develop material and F Mac does not, so score one for the Mac!
Even with all the turmoil within both groups the Eagles don't really want to work together and don't like each other. Never have. No matter what's gone down in F Mac, I think the band members do care about each other on some level or they wouldn't have tried to work together during all the drama, then and now. Not to let FM off the hook. I think both groups are mostly about the money, but the people in F Mac seem to care about each other, a little, even when they hate each other. Does that make sense?
I think each individual band member in both groups is better in their band than alone, but each would have made it in another group if they hadn't gotten together. Too much talent all around. The Eagles are all about the guitars, whereas Lindsey did almost as much on his own using multi layered guitar tracks on the records. The Eagles might seem better live for that reason, but they always phone it in on stage, so who cares? At least the Mac try to look like they enjoy playing live. Both groups shine more in the studio.
Now, Mick's not the best drummer in the world but he's hella better than Don. Don's got him as a songwriter of course. Christine's a better ivory player/composer than anyone in the Eagles and almost as good with lyrics, but Stevie has them all beat there. Stevie's lyrics are not as insightful and universally appealing as they used to be when she was younger, but she's still as good as any of the classic singer/songwriters still out there toiling away. Stevie gets dissed for needing Lindsey or someone else to flesh out her material, but the Eagles always worked with other songwriters and nobody says **** about that. I mean, "Say You Will" compared to "There's A Whole in the World" says enough right there. Whahaha! John McVie vs. Timmy Schmidt, tssstssstsss! Need I say more? Lindsey is not Joe or Don F, but he can hold his own as a player. He's got a similar ear as Don and Glenn for what makes a great record. He has all the record making skills anyone could ever hope to have in a band member. He easily could have been in the Eagles, if not for the package deal. Wahaha!
