It depends on which former Mac members you're referring to when stating they "got the short end of the stick." Anybody prior to 1975, I'd have to say no (sorry Bob). They either left on their own or were sacked for good reason. Dave Walker MAY have gotten the short end, but he really didn't fit in with the band at that point.
Now, for the folks who came after 1987, I agree they got the short end of the stick. On their own, Billy, Rick, and Bekka didn't have big enough names to overcome the ghosts of Fleetwood Mac's past. Dave Mason had an name and a few hits on his own, but his fan base had long since dwindled, and he hadn't released a record since 1987 (and hadn't released a record between 1979 and 1987). I suspect the best time for Mason to have joined would have been in 1987 as the sole replacement for Lindsey.
Personally, I'd love to see a Mick, John, Bekka, Billy, Rick version of Fleetwood Mac, but its appeal would be limited and I doubt that any of the five would even be interested in that at this point. They could all make more money doing other projects or be involved in projects that would offer them more creative freedom.
In my hypothetical (and David's), I think bringing in people who have big hits that would easily fit into Fleetwood Mac's set and have large followings on their own would help people get over the fact that Stevie and Christine aren't there. I could be wrong.
