i think he turned the corner after SYW and in the course of making UTS - so some time in 2004/05. i've been long insisting that's what song Cast Away Dreams on UTS is about (see here for some details
http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showpo...81&postcount=5 ). he finally stopped worrying about commercial solo success and just started churning albums out and touring for the fun of it.
but now with this no advertising, no connection to FM, etc, he's going a bit too extreme, imo.
