As the drummer for now-defunct Australian rock band The Saints Iain Shedden spent many late nights in the spotlight, rubbing shoulders with the stars. These days, as a music writer and critic for The Australian newspaper, he’s still rubbing shoulders with the stars – but it doesn’t always go as planned.

A few years ago he interviewed Fleetwood Mac members Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.

“The two of them were sitting together on a sofa in a Sydney hotel,” Iain said. “I knew they had a fiery relationship: the album Rumours was about their break up. They seemed fine and were chatting away, when Lindsey said something about which month it was when he left the band. Stevie said ‘No, that’s not right’ and it set them off. For 10 minutes, the two of them were hoeing into each other while I waited for it to subside. Eventually she said ‘Sorry, we’d forgotten about you’.

“Clearly it had brought up a lot of bad stuff that had been simmering for a while. You don’t get those moments very often and it’s a nice bit of colour that’s outside of the ordinary interview that you can use, as long as it’s not defamatory.”
