Funny, I was just going to post about how much I'm loving Illume at the moment. Okay, so I know Stevie is mis-pronouncing it, BUT....
I think this is the coolest song Stevie has recorded in a very long time. I love it. I like the way: - her voice gets more and more urgent as the song goes on, which kind of mimics the way panic sets in...slowly at first and then full-on heart-pounding fear. - the way the lyrics seem sort of disjointed and scattered, but in that way capture some vivid elements of what she probably experienced. Her thoughts dash back and forth between the romanticism she was probably trying to settle into on the night of September 10 ("I like the coastal cities"), to the panic she probably felt ("how do we get out?"), to the seemingly more mundane things that were probably in her immediate surroundings in her hotel room, like the "smell of Nag Chapmra," which she probably only needs to get a whiff of to bring her right back to "all of the trauma." - the way Lindsey's voice echoes hers through the song in various tones, adding to the sense that these were the many voices among the masses feeling these feelings. - all of Lindsey's guitar textures in it, a la Gold Dust Woman. - the way the guitar groove initially starts just on the left, and then the percussion breaks in - with drums in the middle and bongos (or whatever that is called) on the right. - Mick's steady beat in the backbone of the song, but then his random bongo beats (or again, whatever it's called that he's playing) throughout that sprinkle through the background, which seems to highlight John's bassline to me somehow. The whole groove just makes me want to sit in a room with my eyes closed and nod my head to the beat. |
EFO, yes! ~~~ I like angel too, but don't have the bootleg~~~:wavey:

There was this label of sorts called "Mainstream Records" which has released on silver CDs a variety of live FM shows. Im pretty sure FM did not get any royalty or give any permission to whomever manufactured them. They are live shows in either soundboard or audience, and some are rehearsals and some are live shows. The ones I have are:
Who's the New Girl 1975 Wallingford, Conneticut studio (soundboard) Conneticut Turning - 1975 Wallingford, Conneticut (soundboard) Rumours are Rampant - outtakes from Rumours Stage - 1977 Japan (audience recording, but *hot* show) Been Down Three Times - Oakland 1977 (soundboard) Tusk Take II - Outtakes from Tusk Tusk Tour Rehearsal - Soundstage in LA in front of 200 ppl. (soundboard) Shine Angel - St. Louis 1979 (soundboard) The Chain of Attachment - Oakland 1983 (soundboard) I also have all three of the Uncirculated Rumours LP's (mainly Stevie early demos), but dont have the Unfounded Rumours LP's. Les... Stevie could have just tweaked Illume to be more of a word to coin the thought and feeling from what happened? (just a guess...) |

Somewhere after this line, I was half-way expecting: "...her sparkling ear-rings lay..." :blob2: |

To add to what you mentioned ~ Lindsey's altered "evil" sounding voice, in the middle of the song, invokes the idea that it may be the DEVIL itself, mocking Stevie's words, and especially the pain of the victims. I'm not religious in any sort of fundamental way, but I get a sense of evil showing itself at that point (not that Lindsey is evil, though). - Josh  |
No, it's LOVE the way ...LOl...

Les!!
WOW!!!! Your description of Illume is greatness!! I frickin LOVE the song and YES, Josh, his "vocal" at that particular spot is kinda evil sounding and mocking almost, you said it PERFECTLY right there! I described it as creepy in my posts. It captures my feelings on that day even tho I was way far away in Texas. I was glued to the TV all night after I got home from work and we heard about it on the radio at work that day...it was unreal, being scared to death, not knowing what to do (I called my dad who works at Lockheed and was crying, asking him if he was going home and I wanted to just go home), panic, nervousness, it's just hard to even explain in words. I love how the song isn't a sappy ballad, but has an urgency in it. Stevie wrote a TERRIFIC poem and Lindsey made the production/music fit with it PERFECTLY! One of my faves on the album, for sure.
I must admit, when I FIRST heard "Point Dume", I thought she was saying "point doom". How wierd is that???? I had never heard of Point Dume. |
I, too, really like Illume. I, too, think it evokes a feeling of longing and pain (esp. at the end), which is what I think she was going for. I do not think, however, she is mispronouncing "Illume;" I think she is referring to a brand of candles named that, which kind of makes sense because that fits in with "says the candle that I burn." Someone posted somewhere a picture of the candles and they do indeed say "Illume" and are reportedly pronounced EE LOOM AY. But, who knows until SN says it herself - and even then . . . .

Ditto..
..everything Les said about Illume.
But you forgot one of the best parts - how the full-on bass riff kicks in towards the end after laying low for a while. It's right when she sings the "Smell of Nag Champra" line at the end. That was a mad touch I thought. |

I LOVE ILLUME TOO! I'd really love to get a hold of the original demo to see what things were added/taken away. |
Illume is one of the songs that will sound really, really great live with all of it's intensity and dimension.
If we are very lucky they will add this to the set list as one of the last songs to perform as it may no doubt put a little strain on stevie's voice. It's a difficult song to conjure with its need for a lot of energy to hold it up. On that alone she may not sing it live. She would definitely sing Illume live if she was solo, I believe. Imagine the band playing this song live! It probably would be likened to the vibe of when stevie does "Gold Dust Woman" live. Always a spellbinding performance. Does anyone remember Fleetwood Mac's live versions of "Gold Dust Woman" during the "Tango In The Night" tour and how they would really play with the songs intros and drawn out endings? Illume has such potential. Unfortunately it has so much potential live that I envision Mick Fleetwood coming out from behind his drums and playing his strange but magickal percussion vest. It could get really wild!?! As for me I am completely obsessed with Stevie's song "Destiny Rules". It's like a little bit of country with a lot of rock 'n' roll! Every word rings true. It's the one song on the album that has been captured in such a way that it reflects so perfectly my relationships with a certain one. There is always that one Fleetwood Mac song that becomes apart of the soundtrack that is to your life...whether ya like it or not! Destiny Rules...need I say more?
