Crying in the Night
I know BN isn't exactly Stevie solo, but since this is a songwriting question, I think it's appropriate for here.
I remember listening to a radio interview in '91 (TimeSpace promotions - 11 and a half years ago, but seems like a lifetime!) & I am 90% sure Stevie said that she wrote this song after seeing (I think) Leslie Ann Warren in a movie. Years later she met the actress & was able to share that she'd written a song about her. Does anybody else remember this stuff (or know what movie she was referring to)? I've never seen any other reference to this story, but I remember hearing Stevie tell it. - Jake |
I remember hearing this as well. Stevie met her because Lesley was dating Jeffrey Hornaday? (don't know if I spelt that right?) who choreographed Stevie's Stand Back video. Stevie said that the movie was very much like Gunsmoke and mentioned a character from the show called Kittie. But I don't think she ever mentioned the movie title.

After I heard that interview, I tried to find out which movie it was. I never figured it out for sure, but this was the closest I could find (date & western) that had Lesley Ann Warren in it:
The Daughters of Joshua Cabe (1972) Category: Western Director: Philip Leacock Cast: Sandra Dee, Buddy Ebsen, Don Stroud, Karen Valentine, Lesley Ann Warren Running Time: 1 hr 13 mins Country: United States Summary: A man recruits three wayward women to pose as his offspring to comply with an unusual new homesteading law It's not available, so can't get it to figure out if it makes sense with Cryin in the Night. |
You're right, the date does fit. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who remembers this story.
Actually, it might be interesting to investigate which songs were influenced by movies (other than the movie soundtrack songs, which, come to think of it, weren't all that influenced by their movies anyway). The only other one I can think of is from Stevie's references to herself being Julia/ Jane Fonda & Robin being Vanessa Redgrave (character name slips my mind), though I haven't seen that movie. Julia is no fool... - Jake |
Beauty & The Beast was inspired by an old movie by the same title. It was done by Jean Cocteau, 1947.

You're right, I forgot that one. (From what I remember from that movie, it seems older than 1947, but I don't doubt the date.)
I always assumed the Garbo songs were inspired by the reclusive actress's lifestyle, but maybe a movie's involved, too. - Jake |

There is also a British film entitled, "Gone to Ground" made by the same folks who made "The Red Shoes". It was released in the US however as. . . "The Wild Heart". It's a black and white movie, made in 1950. Here's a brief snyposis:
"Jennifer Jones plays a tempestuous Welsh gypsy maid who can't seem to stay out of trouble. Feeling more of a kinship with woodland animals than with human beings, the Hazel enters into a loveless marriage with minister Edward Marston (Cyril Cusack). Believing she's been born under a curse which will punish her if she ever truly falls in love, Hazel does her best to suppress her carnal desires, but gives up the struggle when she begins an affair with vicar Jack Reddin (David Farrar). Her inability to be mistress of her own fate leads to a spectacularly tragic denouement. Based on a novel by Mary Webb, Gone to Earth was cut from 110 minutes to 82 for its American release" |

They actually used the words "mistress of her fate" - too much. That's our girl.

It gets better.
I worked in TV programming for about ten years, and we once ran this movie at a station I was working at. The description provided by the distributuor was something like, "A Welsh gypsy girl, torn between her husband and her lover, looks for guidance in a book of spells left to her by her mother." I about fell out of my desk chair when I read that! The thing is, I still have never been able to catch the entire film, only parts! I'd say that there is more than a good chance that Stevie saw this movie and was inspired by it. If not, that's one heck of a coincidence! It certainly does sound like her kind of flick though (and mine too!) |
Worth a bump, since Stevie is singing this song now!

Does anyone have an MP3 of this off the LP they can link please?
