"Goodbye Baby" lyrics confirmed

Courtesy of Neils fantastic site.....he has posted the lyrics to "The Tower" in all their glory- this song is tragic and incredibly moving...esp the extra lines at the end that are not in the demo. Its also interesting to note the 2nd verse has been altered . The original 2nd verse -"And I who went to sleep in tears...woke up in tears...for all of the years...and I had said goodbye before and then.....I said goodbye again." has been cut from the original demo

"Don't take me to the tower
and take my child away
It was I who was
The hourglass
And the sands of time like
Shattering Glass went past me
Like a tunnel to the sea

And I who went to sleep as two
woke up as one now only you remain
You'll close your eyes and travel back
To the time when the light went fading fast
And the words you'll never never forget, oh no
as you slipped away

Goodbye Baby
I hope your heart `s not broken
Don't forget me
Yes I was outspoken
You were with me all the time
I'll be with you one day

And I who went to sleep in tears
Woke up in tears,
And I who never said goodbye
As I slipped away

Goodbye Baby..."

this song is too sad for words....

Oh my. This song is closer to my heart and more personal than *any* of Stevie's other songs... I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes at those new lyrics. Thanks, Christopher, for posting them. This just breaks my heart, and although I'm so glad that it's going to be on the album, I truly hope no one bothers her wanting an explanation as to what these words are about.

Angela, I too found myself holding back the tears when I read the lyrics..esp the end -"I'll be with you one day".

Yipes, if she sings this with just the slightest emotion, I will be a heap on the floor as I pretty much am now after just reading it. I love this demo so much and listen to it often.

I do, however, hope someone asks her what this son is about as I think it is mostly about when they took Rhiannon's baby from her in the legend. I know others have their opinions, but this one is my opinion. Although, I must say that if it really is about what most people think it is about (I am treading carefully here  ), then I hope no one asks her, because that would be rude.

Will April 15, 2002 ever get here?????

I am now convinced April 15th will never come.

WelshWitchPMD 04-03-2003 08:39 PM

Wow those are some sad, powerful lyrics. I now have a soaking wet paper towel in my hand...

Why couldn't it be titled "The Tower" how perfect for a 9/11 tribute, better than "Illume" even. I hope this is sparse and acoustic! What a lovely melody.

DownOnRodeo 04-03-2003 09:03 PM

Ah! For once I'm crying because Stevie's lyrics are good!!

 J/K  ;) :D

Bella Figura 04-03-2003 09:32 PM

Hi Angela, please pass the Kleenex this way 'cause you know I'm right there with you...

The Tower demo has always had such personal meaning to me that I'm am both happy and heartbroken that it has finally made it to an album. It is so mournful that it hurts to listen to sometimes but sometimes you prick a wound to see if it still bleeds and I will happily reopen my pain for such a beautiful song.

and that's what it's all about for me in the end, I am a Fleetwood Mac fan because their music has truly touched me deeply over the years.

and to all that are like me, trying to keep ourselves virginal for the first listen, hold on!!! :wavey:

EnchantedStorms 04-03-2003 09:56 PM

Hey, Bella. :) lol, I'm wondering how I'm going to get through even listening to it at all. I think I'll just order the Kleenex through the company themselves, cause I'm gonna need more than this small town can supply. :D

You are so right, though...FM and (especially) Stevie have helped me through so much... I know this song will, too. Crying actually HELPS sometimes, LOL.

Now I'm gonna go listen to Stand Back or something equally as rocking... I've managed to depress myself.

There are some incredible songs on Say You Will. Hope April 15th comes quickly as I am getting very excited about hearing these songs!

I am soooo happy that is is confirmed! This has always been one of my favorite demos - but so, so sad. Stevie's voice in the demo sounds so tragic and mournful. It makes me cry when I hear it. I am sure Lindsey worked his magic on this one and it will be really overwhelming to hear them sing this together.

Hurry up April 15th!!!!!

sara1998 04-03-2003 11:54 PM

I'm glad I'm not the only one at the monitor bawling.....

I had to sit and think about it before I opened this. I didn't know if I wanted to know yet or not, but I couldn't put myself through it. I agree with Bella Figura about being both excited but heartbroken. "The Tower" and "Goodbye Baby" could be alot different from eachother. I think "Goodbye Baby" will take me some getting used to.

I figure this is going to be a Landslide type effort, with just Stevies vocals and Lindseys acoustic. That's what Neil pretty much said on his site, and seeing as it's the last track and following Say Goodbye, it probably will be.

Mad4stevie 04-04-2003 08:57 AM

Ok - so what do you make of this post about "Goodbye Baby" being "The Tower" over on Mick's site:

Hey, hope im not bursting your bubble, BUT...its not the same song.....its totally different. I have a friend who "knows people" and its definetly NOT that song...the demo was actually recorded during that same time era, I actually had a photocopy of a Reel to Reel tape from a studio session someone had, and one song was "the tower" and there were two takes of the song "goodbye baby"....
Who Knew?

Now I am confused about what the real deal is! Can anyone make sense of this?
