Angry Version - Smile At You?
A couple of people have recently been making reference to how great the 'angry version' of Smile At You is. The thing is, I only have one version of this song, and I didn't know that there was more than one version. So I guess my questions are:
1. How many version of Smile At You exist? 2. How would I be able to recognize if I have the 'angry version' of the song or not? (I have nothing to compare it to.) Thanks! |
Hello!
In the beginning of the "angry version", you can hear Stevie yelling at someone (guessing Lindsey) : "Think about feeling for once in your life!"...Plus the lyircs are different. In the angry version, she seems literally, quite angry. The lyircs are different too. In the angry version she keeps screaming "Flaming" at the end...Here are links to the two different lyrics.... I have seen a total of four different outtakes of "Smile at You" - two from Tusk and two from Mirage. Unfortunately, I only have the two from Mirage (but have seen lyrics to all four). I do think that the "angry" version is the longest of the lot at over five minutes! The easiest way to tell the angry version apart is the repeating of FLAMING at the end.

Following your clues, I'll have to guess that the version posted at sararhiannon.com at this moment, that I downloaded this morning is the "angry" version... I can hear the "think about feeling for once in your life" chat at the beginning. And my God, it's really "angry" version. Very passionate, and impressive. I love it :)
Song of the moment - Smile At You (for obvious reasons) |
Christian, you are correct, the current version of "Smile At You" over at Sararhiannon's website is the "angry" version.....Oh to be a fly on the wall and hear the entire argument!
LOL:laugh: ~Alex |
Actually...
the "Smile At You" on the "Tusk" outtakes are the same 2 on the "Mirage" outtakes...Brian J.

Awesome I had no idea it was even posted, and I'm glad too because after you described it, I figured out that I did not have the 'angry version.' Off to SaraRhiannon's site... :D |
Tusk or Mirage sessions???

You can DEFINITELY tell the angry version, which is from Mirage outtakes, from the more mellow one from Tusk. First of all, the voice difference is pretty obvious, but as people have stated, she sounds TRULY pissed off in the angry version. I love that version.

Do some of you feel that this song is directly about Lindsesy and his "willing one" Carol Ann??? I do..
For those who do, does anyone have an idea as to why Lindsey keeps beinging this song up to work on? If it was me and I knew how passionate and angry my former lover got when the song was written I would not want it to be on a record having to hear it. Why now do you think it has made it to Say You Will??? I would love to hear Stevie explain this one. |

Oh, yeah. I think this is about Lindsey and Carol Ann for sure. From what I have heard/read about Lindsey and Carol Ann, she was basically at his beck and call. He could be holed away in that studio of his for hours upon hours, and she would just sit and watch TV. That really seems to fit the lyrics IMO. Stevie has also said that Lindsey had a very hard time with her becoming the "superstar" of the group - he wanted her to support him just like the good 'ol Buckingham Nicks days when she worked like a dog and he stayed at home and played guitar. Something always bugged me about that . . . I am glad that this is finally gonna be on a record. Stevie deserves to have this "angry" song out there. Payback to Lindsey for all those times she had to hear "shackin' up, packin' up, is all you want to do" from GYOW. Go Stevie!! |
I have three different versions of Smile At You. One is definitely "mellow", but the other two are both kind of "angry"....but one doesn't have the "flaming" part. One is 5:40(the flaming one) and the other is 4:34. Is there another version out there? The mellow version is 4:39.
And Mad4Stevie...lol, that line in GYOW used to make me mad on Stevie's behalf when I heard it, too...but now I think Lindsey meant that Stevie only wanted to shack up with HIM. In other words, he wanted her to marry him, and she said no. LOL! ~Angela~:wavey: |
I didn't think it was about Lindsey...
I always thought this song was about some fling she had with someone who really hurt her pride. I assumed, Don Henley. Because the line "my first mistake was to smile at you" doesn't seem like something she would say about Lindsey. Even when she was at her most pissed off at him, I don't think she ever regretted getting into a relationship with him. Even at her most pissed, she was grateful to him in some way for doing amazing things to her music. I don't think Lindsey broke her heart as much as she broke his. And in the Tusk/Mirage years I highly doubt she would have written a song to let him know he hurt her. The emotion in that song is way too fresh and raw to be about 1976 (plus wasn't he with Carol Ann during the Rumours tour?). They were not communicating much then, and her mind was really elsewhere (she was totally itching to get out on her own during Tusk, and Bella Donna was in the works). In those couple of years she had a couple of stormy flings/relationships. I like to think could be about Don Henley because he really didn't want a strong woman around, he REALLY hurt her pride, and she was kind of bitter and disgusted with him, enough to write those lyrics I think. I could see how for a moment she may have been so mad she regretted getting involved with him...but i don't think regret was something she associated with Lindsey. JMO.
BTW, I always heard the non-angry version called the "soft" version. :D -Sonia |
I think Stevie still will get her "revenge" for GYOW if she gets to sing "Smile At You" on stage. Take a look at her take on GYOW:
"I very very much resented him telling the world that 'packing up, shacking up' with different men was all I wanted to do. He knew it wasn't true. It was just an angry thing that he said. Everytime I those words would come onstage, I wanted to go over and kill him. He knew it, so he really pushed my buttons through that. It was like, 'I'll make you suffer for leaving me.' And I did." -[Stevie] Rolling Stone October 30, 1997 "Oh it bugged me terrible. And I had to listen to it every night and sing along with it. It would just put me back in the place where Lindsey and I were when he wrote that song… back to our apartment [where he was] really angry with me. It was kind of like I had to revisit the world of the big fight every time he sang it." -[Stevie] The Phoenix Gazette June 6, 1994 |
