Turn to the Wall, baby...

I recieved this cd like a year ago and I asked about this song and no one knew what it really was.

Im asking again...

It sounds like from the same era One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star.

And at one part, she goes Turn into the wall, Joe!

And another part she says ( very sadly), "I don't even know why you left me"

Its a really good song and I love it, and I just wanted to know the title and it's history.

Its sounds like its about Lindsey and Fleetwood Mac but then she mentions Joe..which throws me off.

But then I think she is saying Joan of Ark and she went go into the wall Joan.

If anyone knows, thanks.

re:

Its not Joe, but Joan.

The song is called "Joan of Arc" , its a demo from 'Tango in the Night'.

(lyrics borrowed from SaraRhiannon.com....)

"Joan Of Arc"

They wanted images
When images were unspoken
They depended upon illusion...
Calling the illusion, "gold and glitter"
And they came in tired
And they said tired was the end of the line
Well, I can't save you...
Joan of Arc... this time
Turn to the wall, baby
Turn it to the wall, now
Turn to the wall...
Joan of Arc
Turn to the wall, baby
Turn it to the wall now
Well, no there's really nothing that you can do for me...
To make me better...

Well, there's a few martyrs in our century
They take a limousine because everything else
Is taken care of...
And they don't even know what they died for
Turn to the wall
Turn it to the wall...
Joan of Arc
Ooh, turn to the wall
Turn it to the wall
Turn it to the wall, baby
Turn it to the wall, Joan

Gone like the wind... like the stars in the dust...
Well, her little tin soldier
Is covered with rust and
Your beautiful eyes...
Whoa, well they look sad to me now
And I don't even know why you left me
She saw it all... It was a tiresome ending,
He stormed out, hearing the door slamming...
Behind him
Ooh, she didn't even know why he left her

He said, turn it to the wall, baby
Turn to the wall

Turn to the wall, baby
You go up against the wall now
Turn it to the wall, Joan
Ooh... turn it to the wall, baby
Turn it to the wall, now
Ooh... up against the wall, baby
Well, I can't save you... this time
Turn it to the wall, baby
Turn to the wall
Whoa, no
Oh, no...
Oh, no...

So turn it to the wall
Get up against the wall, baby
She says, "Is there anything that I can do for you...
To make you better?"
So... just turn it to the wall, baby
Turn to the wall
Oh no, there's really nothing that you can do
Turn to the wall, Joan
Ooh, turn to the wall
Turn it to the wall now
Up against the wall
Joan of Arc...
Oh no...
Oh no...

Absolutely fantastic song, one of my favourite demos by far

Should of been on Tango, considering its better than ANY of stevies other efforts on there

Thank you so much.

I have heard of Joan of Ark totally, but I guess I never put two and two together. I think I even had that on tape, but it wasn't until I got this cd...which is just a bunch of demos and stuff...

You know I hear this song and I just hear Lindsey all over it, but I guess this can't be from when he left because its a Tango demo.

But she is a prophet right?

I LOVE this song and if this was used instead of Welcome to the Room this album would have been far better, because this is the Stevie sound I love, she is so intense on this song!!

I know this was leaked initially (I think it was on the Missing Links collection first) as a "Tango in the Night" demo, & I used to just accept it as that.

But the last couple of years, I've been wondering whether it really is. There's something about the instrumental part of the song that makes me think it was Stevie's own producers & players in the throes of some sort of weird experimentation rather than the Mac Brigade.

does anyone else have this feeling?

Then again, the way her vocal is recorded & the ambience around it sound a lot like her vocal on "Seven Wonders."

Interesting theory,....
But Ive never had a second thought about it being an outtake from "tango",
The Lyrics are very Stevie of that time....right before, after Betty Ford....
And the guitar on it has always seemed unmistakable Lindsey.

wherever its from, Its a shame it didnt make Tango,(although Ive heard that maybe it was a bit too dark for the poppy effervecent tunes that comprise that CD.........or at least Stevie could have included it on The other Side of the Mirror...It fits that theme perfectly.

Even though I have a slight appreciation of this song, I am glad it was never released because of the appalling lyrics. Stevie delivers an impassioned vocal performance but lines such as "And they said tired was the end of the line"; "Well, there's a few martyrs in our century/They take a limousine because everything else is taken care of" and "It was a tiresome ending/He stormed out, hearing the door slamming behind him" are extraordinarily embarrassing. Wretched in the extreme.
