Vinyl or CD

A few years ago when Stevie was promoting TISL she made an appearance on the Tonight Show with Sheryl Crow. Jay Leno sometimes asks his guests to pick between two things. One thing that "kind of" bewildered me was their answer to vinyl or cd. In unison they both replied vinyl....it was ONE if not the ONLY thing they agreed on. I have a lot of old vinyl lps and treat them as treasures from things of the past...but I rarely play them(the snap, crackle, and pop does distract from the music). To me, the better sound quality of a cd would be enough for me to choose it of the two. I "guess" to Sheryl and Stevie they view vinyl as being more warm and personal, not so "techno", and have personal affections for it.

Some other choices and responses:

Paris Or London?

Stevie got a plug in and said something flaky like London to Paris and then back...I think she was singing "I Miss You" in her head. Of course Jay would not have any of that and scolded her for breaking the rules. Stevie opted for Paris because she never gets there and Sheryl chose London....I'm with Sheryl on that one.

Backstreet Boys Or NSync?

Stevie chose Nsync and wise Sheryl said neither because she could never figure out who was in which band!

There were few others too like cash or credit but I can't remember exactly how they played out.

I remember that Stevie said that she likes cash because she doesn't like paying later and Sheryl said credit.

My favorite part of that interview was after Jay asked the question about cash or credit, he asked if they preferred paper or plastic at the market...and Stevie said cash:laugh: That just cracked me up like nothing else. I'm laughing right now just thinking about it:)

Anyway, that was a fun little interview. It was nice to hear some everyday random questions.

Oh yea that was it.... And she never uses an ATM either. I recall that in another radio interview before she was asked that question, the dj said that when Sting had been there previously, they asked him the same question, and he didn't even know what one was! I guess when you have that much money there's no need to mess with ATMS.

Thanks for the refresher Colleen.

I absolutely agree...lol. Vinyl all the way! (Although I do agree w/Adam that cd's are more convenient.) Every album I ever bought was on vinyl until they quit carrying them in the stores, which was probably when I was about fifteen. I'm twenty-eight now. :D I didn't have a turntable for awhile, but my husband bought me one a few years ago, and then my mom and my grandmother gave me all of their albums. With the ones that I already had from my own collection, it added up to quite a large number.

Some great old music, from just about everyone you can imagine. The snaps, crackles, and pops don't really bother me at all, and I'd *much* rather hear a record skip, than a cd! Oooh, that just drives me nuts! Kinda like fingernails on a chalk board. lol!

Thanks for your input Ledgies. :)

Brian...what is an analog lp? I do have lps that are orginal master recordings that have a higher fidelity sound than the ones that are mass produced. Just curious.....thanks.

Ths could be a long post...

if I wrote what an analog LP is. Here is a URL that gives a kinda basic explanation for "Analog" sound waves (Its kinda basic but it gives a somewhat look at "analog"):

http://www.segall.com/atr.html

BTW, Which master LPs do you have? There are some great high fidelity LP's out there (ie-MFSL a.k.a. Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs) that sound as great as Cd's, If not even better IMO...Even when "analog" LP's are transferred to Cd they have a great warmth to the sound that some "digital" sourced music Cd's are lacking (ie-Any of the Beatles MFSL LP transfers to Cd sound better than the official Cd releases by Apple/EMI/Capitol)...Brian J.

I totally agree! I say vinyl all the way! Music wasn't meant to be put on digital cds. Digital cds were meant for data not music. Therefore, you will get a warmer, truer sound from vinyl, that was made for music, that you won't get from a cd. Cds sound more cold and steely, so long live analog and vinyl!

Hey Brian

Thanks for the link.....I knew this thread would go somewhere ;)

I have The White Album done by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab and Rumours by Nautilus Recordings. I knew they played better than my original copies of those albums but I haven't played them in a long time. It'll be even LONGER now that my turntable just went on the fritz. :distress:

Thanks for the info....I'll have to look closer at this analog recording process.

DVD Audio...

does have a great sound to it, Kinda bad that it's just not catching on here in the U.S...Maybe with the increase in DVD sales there's still some hope...

But I know what can even beat DVD-A, Master tapes!!! Especially if you're the "pirates" who just were busted in the Netherlands with over 500 reel-to-reel master tapes from the Beatles...lol...Brian J.
