Stevie's Hidden Messages

Or should that read "not-so-hidden".

She seems to do this a lot within her songs, and though it sometimes feels like she has a vocabulary limited to "link", "chain", "dream" "sea" "and" "the" "days" "go" "by"... (j/k), in most cases it's extremely effective, sometimes it may not even be intentional.

"Fireflies" references "Long Distance Winner", "Destiny" is "Enchanted", and "The Nightmare" is her "Glass Onion" (the 80's synth work has just now been drowned out by the sound of John Lennon rolling in his grave, j/k).

A bit trite, but I noticed one today that could have been her audio equivelant of a time bomb, lit in 1994 on "Love Is Like A River", and detinated 7 years later. It occured to me today that just after one of her most obvious references during "LILAR" ("Straight back to the sea"), a guitar riff *very* similar to that found on the 2001 rerecording of "Planets Of The Universe" has been inserted. Am I nuts? (with regard to this, no analysis of my overall mental required thankyouverymuch)

Well...

I see these more as themes than hidden messages.
I LOVE Stevie's themes: the sea, light, shadows, angels, ghosts, dolls, mirrors, birds, flowers, running, water, beautiful women's names, singing in the third person...I could go on for ever! To me, these are themes she has used to tell so many different stories, and I love it when some of the same phrases pop up every now and then. I feel like I'm hearing a familiar friend...you know, like when the way someone you love expresses themselves in a unique way it becomes very endearing.:)
Lindsey does it too.:D
Why exactly do you think John Lennon would roll in his grave, Mattress? I didn't quite understand what you meant- do you mean he would hate 80's synth stuff? If that's the case, I disagree. I bet during the 80's if he had lived, he would have embraced some of that contemprary sound the same way Paul McCartney and a whole host of other respectable rock musicians did. Look at Lennon's crazy experimental production of the late 60's (i.e. What's The New Mary Jane, and singing into an organ to get the vocal quality of I am The Walrus and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds). He would have had a lot of fun in the 80's and made some amazing music. I also think he totally would have appreciated Lindsey's Go Insane.
Now I'm getting a little depressed. :distress:
(I think Lennon probably would roll in his grave at our war-obsessed president. )
Sorry. I don't mean to start a Beatles thread or a political one for that matter.

As for your mental state, Mattress, no comment.:D:D:D:D
