Timespace interview

These are old interviews I've heard over 15 years ago. For some reason they were in my suggested page and I listened again. I miss this angry Stevie vs Mick era so much. Stevie is so tranquilized that she really reveals information that I do not think she intended to tell. Some of her exaggerations are so funny. I will recap parts one and two if you dont have time to listen.

Part 1:
Stevie describes her fight with Mick and how he avoided Stevie's call. Mick would not return her call so she hunted down Dennis to make him call her. Mick refused to give her Silver Springs. The way Stevie describes it is that she wanted to funnel royalties of the song to her mother. She also wanted the Mac version on Timespace.
Then Stevie describes how Silver Springs was dumped from Rumours. Stevie protested but said the band "put a gun to her head" and told her that if she did not want I Dont Want To Know on the album then she would only have 2 songs.
Stevie talks about her management not wanting her to do the BTM tour because they thought it was going to bomb

Part 2:
She says Fleetwood Mac always hated her solo career.
She discusses her marriage to Kim. She admits she was insane and Kim was insane also. She said that she and him bonded visiting Robin and Mathew in the hospital for weeks. They made a pact to always take care of Mathew and 3 months after her death they were married. Stevie says her parents thought she was nuts before this decision but her parents thought she was even more nuts then before when she told them. Don Henley hung up the phone on her when she invited him to the wedding. Then Stevie revealed what a horrible person Kim was to her. Kim only allowed people at the house that he approved of and she needed permission from him. Kim never let Stevie in the nursery and the nanny took care of Mathew. She was finishing the Stand Back video and her crew was dropping her clothes off at the house and Kim would not let them inside. She also said that many times Kim thought she was Robin and it scared her. He became very controlling of her and before she left on the Wild Heart tour she asked for a divorce. She said Kim had only sent her one photo of Mathew and she never saw either of them again (1991).

Really some freaky stuff revealed while she was sedated on klonopin.

Omitting "Silver Springs" from Rumours is one thing. Wasting it on a B-side is far worse.

They should have assured Stevie it would go on the next album, and perhaps also assured her they'd make it the lead single.

Tusk would have benefitted from its inclusion, and it would have been a good song to release as a single from it.

I would not say it was being wasted on a B side. It made the song famous for that reason. Many bands put their padding or filler songs as B sides. Fleetwood Mac was at its peak in 1977 and even their cutting room floor left overs were so good they all should have made their next album. Also in the 1970s '45 singles sold like hot cakes. We were kids and did not have enough money for the album so we bought 45's of our favorite song. When Fleetwood Mac stopped releasing singles from Rumours there was still demand for the band. Radio DJ's started playing Silver Springs since it was released on vinyl on the flip side of GYOW. It became a cult classic. I don't know your age but when I was an early teen in the 1980s we all ran to the radio frantically trying to find a blank tape so we could hold it up to the radio to record the song. Had Silver Springs been on Rumours it would not have had that cult phenomenon. Had it never made the B Side and left on the floor with the other Rumours demos it could have been lost forever. Its cult status is what made it the springboard for The Dance. Not only was it the 20th anniversary of Rumours in 1997 but their MTV single was Silver Springs. How appropriate.

Disagree. The best thing that happened for the song was exactly what happened. The whole story behind why it didn't make the album and then its resurgence through The Dance made the song have more impact than it ever would have had if it had been released on Rumours or delayed for Tusk.

Exactly! I say that all the time. There's no way that song would have made the long-lasting impact that it did were it not performed at the Dance reunion show. for good or bad, social media gave it a life of its own and an exposure that would never have occurred in 77.

Agree. It coming out at a point where her songwriting had gone so far downhill and she had lost her motivation to write was a godsend. She would not have gotten the boost in attention and popularity at a time when she needed it badly otherwise (1997). It's one of her best songs and reminded people how she could/can write if she actually tries..... Plus the video of them singing it on The Dance was perfect for social media memes, where it lives forever (even tho it pre dates the internet)

Plus it gave Stevie another chance to tell the world how her song got screwed on being cut from Rumours. Its in the Rumours 20th anniversary show about her parking lot moment with Mick. This story over and over portrayed Stevie and the song as a victim that sort of brought everyone back together and was the showcase for the Dance. Silver Springs got its just desserts.
In the interview I posted Stevie claimed the band "put a gun to her head" and said if she did not consent to I Don't Want To Know then she would only get 2 songs. I think this is a reason she resents I Don't Want To Know so much to this day.
So glad she survived her being held at gun point.
;)

100%. When you think about how many amazing, more radio friendly songs were on Rumours, there's no way Silver Springs would have had the kind of impact it did later on as part of The Dance. I'm sure it was disappointing that Silver Springs didn't make Rumours, but I can't see a midtempo song like SS outperforming any of the Rumours singles -- i.e. GYOW, YMLF, Dreams, or Don't Stop.

And I don't even think Stevie would have wanted SS to be on Tusk. She would have complained that it got stuck on an album that didn't sell. She wanted it for Timespace because she knew a greatest hits album would sell a lot and make a lot of money.

It wouldn't have been right to include the Mac version in Timespace, IMHO. It's a Fleetwood Mac track. But I don't think recording it for this album would have turned out very well. And I don't think they wasted the song on the B-side. However, I never though it could have been in Tusk, but yes it would have fit perfect! And maybe the album would have sold more. But... it waited until 1997, and the song exploded—wonderfully. And those glances between L&S... it couldn't have been better (obviously, at the time).

Fleetwood Mac always hated her solo career? Naaaaa. Was Lindsey jealous? Yes, sometimes I guess he was. But did the band hate it? I won't spend my time commented more about it.

To be fair, it’s always good to hear the other side (Kim) and find out what he thinks about that time and what he has to say. Although, to be honest, that chapter is closed—it’s in the past, and I’m not exactly dying to know.

It may not have fit but it definitely would have boosted sales of the album. She probably was scared since OSOTM was considered almost a flop for her. She said Timespace was not greatest hits but her favorite songs. So I can understand why she wanted it. $$$

She said that? Naaa... Timespace is a classic GH. Oh Stevie Stevie, if there is one talent you haven't lost, it's making me laugh. Cause since most of the songs are the ones that got the most radio airplay, and the title includes the phrase "The Best of..." that means a GH to me. And it is not unusual for a greatest hits album to include a couple of new songs—which, obviously, aren't hits yet upon the album's release, and might never become ones. So Best of, Very Best of, Greatest Hits... all the same so then to quote Phoebe Buffay... "potato patata".

However box sets could be, and usually are, something different. And Enchanted seems more as a personal selection than a GH, cause it includes rare B'sides, alternate versions, tracks excluded from previous albums. So there were songs I never heard on the radio. Obviously Enchanted is not a classic GH, and for me—since I never owned all her solo albums—buying it was a good idea; I really enjoyed it.

She's said it a million times. Her record company came to her and told her to release a Greatest Hits album. She balked at it because back then a Greatest Hits album was a sign of a washed up performer. She would only go along if it was not called Greatest Hits. She named it Timespace. She left off top 40 hits Nightbird and After The Glitter Fades and added Beauty and the Beast which was not even released as a single. Whole Lotta Trouble never charted and it was on the album too This is why she wanted Silver Springs too. She said a million times she resented a "Greatest Hits" album. It was a compromise between her and her record company which songs to put on. She added her favorite songs that many would not know.
Yes of course its a greatest hits album but I suppose none of this was in "the book." ;)

The world needs Mick to write a book about Stevie's life and career. It would be titled *Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures with Stevie Nicks*. All of us ledgie should write letters to Mick asking him to do it.

Ok after emphasizing that it was a joke (guys, please don't get upset), I agree about the GH as a sign of a washed up. But for many singers and bands sometimes it was a sign of a turning point. Specially those GH released at the end or beginning of a decade. I'm thinking in Queen's GH. Though they already changed their style with The Game album, their 80s albums were radically different from those of the 70s. I compare GH Vol 1 (1981) with Vol 2 (1991) and it's so evident how the band changed.

Same as Madonna. The Immaculate Collection (1990) is very different than the GHV2 (2001).

The greatest example of releasing a Greatest Hits album and still going strong and blowing up charts is the Eagles. The Eagles Greatest Hits album had huge hits and was released in 1976 before Hotel California and The Long Run. I believe both those albums were their most successful and they came post Greatest Hits. Their volume 1 Greatest Hits is still ranked the best selling album by a rock artist. Very rare achievement and only The Eagles could have pulled that off. The album has sold 75 million copies worldwide, is the best selling Greatest Hits album ever and is the 4th best album of all time.
It sort of made sense for the Mac to release a Greatest Hits album in 1988. It was the end of an era and a beginning of another. It also gave the band a test case for the new members. The album sold really well but just imagine if the new line up had a big hit off it. Shockingly As Long As You Follow tanked and did not even make top 40.
Having said all that I believe Greatest Hits albums are cheezy when you love the band. The better songs are always the deeper cuts. The Greatest Hits packages I have bought were from artists I was a casual fan like Billy Squire and Pat Benatar.

And just after those two studio albums, they release a GH vol 2. I bought that album when I was just starting to like Eagles beyond the HC song and didn't know their entire discography. But then I found nonsense that a new GH volume appeared after just 2 albums, but then I learned they had broke u... sorry, they had taken a 14 year vacation.

One thing I hate in GHs is that some songs are cut off, shortened, etc. Like Queen's Under Pressure or Pat Benatar's We Belong (I bought the Best Shots CD).
