Joe Jackson Interview

Sorry if this has been posted before.

Here is where she talks about BTM, Stevie not being there just as little as Tango. 20:45

Funny how she talks about the "Everywhere" vocals incident.

They were so f'nnn lucky to have her. She's my hero. Does not really like to bs around facts.

That's a good interview. she does seem very honest in her recollections. the part about ed always makes me cringe, though... how 'i trust him and he trusts me'.... ugh. and her happy marriage... 'well, we hope it stays that way!'

It did not...

also the part about how she didn't drink that much, and how she wasn't an alcoholic...and then later she said she 'drinks at night' --a bottle of wine, and how she wrote at night...

not sure she was seeing that picture clearly...?

You know, for several years a group of friends and I would have Sunday Funday, every other week, and the activities of the day would always end with us at a winery, where our saying was, "a bottle of wine is a serving for ONE", so we all had our own bottle. And sometimes our own second bottle for the road home(yes, we had a DD).

So don't judge the Queen of FM too harshly. She's my heroine.

Now that's something we do have in common. And specially right now. Cheers (while listening FM).

My Sunday night ritual is staying home watching movies and a bottle of red.

Cheers!

She handled herself and those questions brilliantly. Never ruffled, always generous, and pretty honest.

Yes, as Lis mentions, she seems in denial about her own drinking, but otherwise, she’s candid, honest, and quite at ease answering whatever was thrown at her.

I did enjoy her response about her significant role in the making of Tango, and her recognition that she and Mick in particular helped a lot/suggested parts on Lindsey’s songs/ had ideas about the overall production. She never gets her due re: Tango. It’s clear she was involved a lot in its making.

I did not always appreciate the interviewer’s supposedly “hard hitting” questions, which honestly seemed aimed at stirring up **** more than anything else. Maybe it was the way he asked the questions? Something about his voice? Certainly, he did not always seem as if he were listening to her even-tempered answers, often making “yah, yah” mumbles while she spoke, as if he wanted her to finish so he could try and catch her off guard with another question. I was not especially impressed with his approach.

This is a great find. I love that she clarified Oh Daddy about being about Mick. She was writing it as Mick's wife that was separating from Mick. Makes sense.

She seemed to walk back her coke use in this interview. Years later she would admit cocaine kept her up all night and inspired Songbird. She also said her and Stevie would wear spoons around their necks in previous interviews. She also said she did coke every night and drank a bottle of champagne. But in 1990 it seemed to be still a secret.

The interviewer asking her about forced sterilization was a bit much. Chris seemed to take it well but an interviewer should never make the interviewee feel uncomfortable.

I love older interviews because we know the future. Her description of "gutsy" songs on BTM is sort of spot on.

Yeah, I have felt that many times she's changed her story on this. as i'm sure i've said before, they have all BS'd quite a bit regarding their addictions, sobriety etc. i wonder if being buzzed in certain interviews contributed to being more honest... maybe the filter was dropped in those moments. her drinking was not great all the way up through her later years, and she did go to rehab for it. so interesting how she said she didn't think she'd ever be an alcoholic. IMO she already was! i think she and john both had a lot of denial over the severity of their indulgence.

That question about the sterilization was so odd! chris did handle it well, i mean she was the one who spilled the beans about it in the first place so i guess she was ok discussing it but the interview did come off as a little intrusive.

Yeah, the rumors about "Oh Daddy" being about Curry Grant are farfetched. Carol Ann Harris may have confused "Oh Daddy" with "You Make Loving Fun" when writing her book.

I found the interviewer to be a bit intrusive with some of his questions related to the sterilization and drug use. Christine was forthcoming with the information and probably handled these questions better than most people.

I'm curious which songs on Behind the Mask she viewed as gutsy. She seemed to be fond of "In the Back of My Mind" in the Mix interview, but I'm curious if she had any other songs in mind when she made that comment.

They were still in the midst of their career so no time to reflect and be too honest. When they got older and were considered a "Come back" band they were more honest in their reflections. I had to laugh when she said she could attest that everyone in the band is clean except some drinking. They could see Stevie was tranquilized and Mick never stopped anything.
One of the saddest visuals ever is Stevie being interviewed late 1991 by MTV Asia and being so tranquilized she looked sedated. She was asked about drug addiction and she was talking about it in the past and talked about it like a Sara Lee pastry addiction.
Chris did handle the interview well and rolled with the punches. It was rude to keep trying to get her to comment on Stevie's "personal problems."

Agree that the interviewer was pretty much a twat.

No finesse; not a good listener; trying to bait her into gossipy revelations; an overall bellend.

Like Homer said, and I'll say it, too. The thing with alcoholics, they really don't think they are. But, as you said, she was honest and generous.

I think she was in control quite a bit, she had her moments of course.

But, I dare any one of you to tour w/ Fleetwood Mac and not tip the bottle, smoke some weed, and do a few lines!!!.......................and have sex.... :)
