Don't Stop deep dive

Don't Stop is not a favorite around here but it has many unique qualities that get over looked. It was not played on the Rumours tour until it was released as a single very late on the tour. Chris played Oh Daddy instead. It was the 4th Rumours single and the second highest charting single at #3. Warner stopped releasing singles from the album after Don't Stop. That would never happen today. Imagine an album getting a huge #3 hit and then just stopping to let the album fade to not burn itself out.
Check out this clip of isolated vocals. Is this not Lindsey's best vocal or at least one of them? He's hitting the highest notes but with passion. I can almost see his veins popping out in his neck. I wonder who's idea this was to do as a duet. Lindsey and Chris's vocals mesh so well together. But besides taking the first verse, Lindsey is singing the chorus "Don't Stop." Chris is almost coming in as background vocals with "Thinking About Tomorrow" Its quite the interesting mix. These alternating parts work so well. I once saw an interview with Mick that said that Chris brought the song like a bluesy shuffle the way she used to play. I suppose Lindsey got his hands on it and tweeked it into this faster tempo shuffle that turned into the ultimate pop hit. Who remembers Peter Jennings of ABC news broadcasting from the Democratic National Convention after Bill Clinton got the nomination and the song playing and Peter saying "Don't Stop, that Jefferson Starship classic." A few minutes later he had to broadcast his mistake

Don't Stop one of my favorites. I know the two collaborated strongly on many songs, but when they both sing, it's even more noticeable. Although they're very different songs, it also shines in World Turning and even in Hold Me.

And Think About Me. Lindsey's vocals are right there with Christine's.

My favorite FM songs have always been the LB/CM duet songs.

I never really thought too much about that but I think you are right. World Turning features both Lindsey and Chris coming in and out of verses and choruses together. I wonder if they had so much fun with it that they wanted to duplicate that on Rumours and then Think About Me on Tusk and Hold Me on Mirage.
Its also what made Buckingham McVie so special. Its also what Stevie angry and jealous in 1975 with Chris and Lindsey writing and singing together.

Interesting. Stevie's excessive ego is indisputable, but when and what did she say that makes you think this specifically?

Keith Olsen has said this. I believe its also in Mick's book. Stevie and Lindsey never wrote together and now Lindsey is writing with Christine. It rubbed her the wrong way and she got jealous.
I don't think she has every commented on this but others have.

I actually think she has... don't hold a gun to my head over it, but I swear I do recall her admitting at one point in an interview years later that the two of them doing World Turning without her did chap her backside a bit.

She has said something about it. She wasn't angry when she said it, but said at the time she was a bit shocked to see him writing with her.

i recall this also. she said that even though she loved chris, it made her jealous that lindsey and chris were writing a song together, because this wasn't really something she and lindsey ever did.

One small but important correction: “Don’t Stop” was the third single from Rumours. “You Make Loving Fun” was the fourth.

I think I recall reading somewhere that Chris had hoped the label chose YMLF third.

Yes—she admitted this in an interview around the era of The Dance.

Thank you for the correction.

I just watched Part I of the Billy Joel doc. I see The Stranger had 5 singles, it was mentioned kind of a record. We already wonder why Rumours only had 4 singles. There were plenty of options for a fifth single, and even more. I remember years ago I played Rumours entirely for a friend, he said Sounds like a Greatest Hits album.

Hotel California was the same as Rumours. It had 3 hit singles and then stopped releasing singles. Back in those days it was a huge success to have 2 hit singles off an album. 3 or more was unheard of. But I suppose the Eagles had the same philosophy as the Mac to not burn the public out of their music. That would never happen today.

It likely was a financial decision. The album was selling so well there was no need to promote it further. Even long after the fourth single, Rumours was outselling The Stranger. But yes—there were two or three other songs they could gave easily charted in the top 20 or 30.
