VIDEO: SN in Tempe, AZ (12/5/81)
|
I wish it was more cohesive. It cut quickly you barely have time to register the song. But it is extremely cool. I wish they would post the whole show

Wow, spectacular. She was on top of her game in 1981. I don't think anyone anticipated how big Bella Donna was going to be when released. Instead of hanging out with Tom Petty that summer flying around the country with him it would have been nice to get a 3 month White Winged Dove tour. Stevie was really burning the candle at both ends in 1981. She recorded a solo album, flew back and forth to France to record Mirage, appeared with Tom Petty on his CA, FL and a few other cities and finally did a small solo tour in December before rushing back to France for final touches and immediately starting Gypsy and Hold Me videos.

I was amazed to see so much dancing/movement from her! More even than the HBO show. Also, unusual to see her play during the day; I wonder what the reason for that was. |
Here is something I did not know. Compton Terrace, the outdoor amphitheater was owned by Stevie's father. Many acts played there including Fleetwood Mac during the summer of 1980. So this homecoming really must have been special.
Compton Terrace was an amphitheater owned by Jess Nicks, father of Stevie Nicks, in Tempe, Arizona, originally located on the grounds of Legend City from 1979 until its closing in 1983. Nicks chose the amphitheater’s name in honor of William Edward "Bill" Compton III, a Valley radio rock 'n' roll icon, considered the father of “free form” radio and programmer of pioneering stations KCAC and KDKB. At the peak of his career, in 1977, Compton was killed in an automobile accident. A who’s who of rock 'n' roll performed at the Legend City Compton Terrace before the park finally closed in 1983 and relocated to Firebird International Raceway in 1985 that was located in Chandler, Arizona. |
And still playing choked up during Rhiannon, I see.
Such a neat video. I appreciated the closeups of the boots. Almost what it would have been like to have been there from that vantage point. |
John Stewart using a Model 1 like Lindsey. Interesting.

and "Scanned by Quazza." It, sure, would be nice to know if the whole show is available out there, somewhere!:) |

I didn't read the disclaimer from Classic Rock Media Archive. The music that John Stewart is playing at the start of the video, sounds a little bit, to me, like the Eurythmics' "Missionary Man"! |

Russ Kunkel and Bob Glaub both joined Stewart for his set. |
Of all people who would open for a Stevie concert, John would be way down the list even with their history of working together.

--- Shame that the discussion in the YouTube comments of this video is more engaging and substantive than the dialogue here. --- For the fine people complaining about the shortness of this clip, the OP on YouTube also notes, "We're working on getting hundreds of feet of film from 4 shows in 1977 soon. We have the first 6 minutes scanned :)" |
The 8 mm cameras in the early 80s I remember were not little, I think they weighed about 4 lb. I don't know if there were other little, light or compact models but if this video was filmed with one of those cameras I remember, it must have been a considerable effort.
It would have been noticeable too, so it must have been recorded by someone with authorization. Does anybody know who is Pamela Lee Richards? I found a film editor with that name, but couldn't find anything related to Stevie or that tour. |
