Have the 1990 femaie rockers stood the time?

I don't hear Sheryl Crow, Melissa Ethridge, Sarah McLachlan, Jewell, Alanis.... any of them on the radio anymore. I don't see them selling out tickets. I really don't hear their names mentioned anymore at all. Sheryl is getting inducted in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that is from the industry, not the public. There is not much about them on twitter either and they are getting old.

However, Stevie, Joni Mitchell, Heart and Linda Rondstadt are still talked about. Stevie is selling out tickets, getting Barbie dolls made of her and is all over twitter.

I feel the 1990 female rockers have not stood the test of time. How do you feel?

I voted no, although my view is a little complicated. The ones you mentioned may have passed out of fashion, but I think as a group they left their mark on dozens of newer female singer-songwriters. Bre Kennedy, Taylor Swift, Blondfire, Darcy Fox, there are hundreds of them. They pop up in my Spotify algorithm probably because I have some Aimee Mann and Sheryl Crow.

Staying power across decades is very rare in music, not just rock but classical too. The golden boy Stewart Goodyear of fifteen years ago is already well past the hot topic. And Paul Lewis? When was the last time his name was mentioned? Piotr Anderszewski? What Fleetwood Mac has with appealing to new audiences every generation is special.

I agree. And not only female but male singers, solo singers, bands, etc.

It's a complicated question. To me, "stand in time" may mean still hearing them on the radio, or just fill stadiums with new (or old?) songs setlist, or fill those stadiums with young people, not only old fans. Or sell thousands if not millions of brand new material albums. Or just ask young people if they know this singer by just mention her name.

Jondalar, this is an interesting discussion. What you’re describing is the general arc of just about every pop culture figure. At a certain point, they fade into irrelevance. That happened to Stevie and Fleetwood Mac, too — in, coincidentally, the 90s, the decade you’re talking about! Up until 1997 and The Dance, neither Fleetwood Mac the band nor any of the solo members (especially Stevie) could get arrested. It was only once they came back as a nostalgia act that people started paying attention again.

When it comes to the artists you’ve mentioned, it’s possible they could come back in a similar way from where they are now. However, it probably wouldn’t happen to the extent of FM and Stevie. I think that’s because of 1) the enormity of FM’s peak popularity; few bands have had albums that scored as big as Rumours, plus FM also had sustained success across multiple albums from 1975 to 1987; and 2) Stevie never stepped away from music and committed to family life in the way that I believe all the women you name have. She has chosen/been able to consistently tour through the decades, keeping her in the public eye. (Btw I’m not saying either choice is more valid.)

No. Although Sheryl did get inducted into the RRHOF, the 90s artists do not have the same staying power as Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, and others from the 70s and 80s. The top artists of the 90s are now playing outdoor sheds in the summer on double or triple bills.

Moreover, the days of artists having a long, storied career and becoming a legendary icon are OVER. Today's mass consumption society can no longer build and sustain careers like the rock and roll legends of yesteryear. Quite frankly, people don't have the attention span anymore. Careers begin and end within a few years, and our disposable society is on to the next TikTok trend. Everything is disposable now.

So true. The 70's and 80's were the PEAK of music, and society, IMO. Everything's disposable now.

You’re right about the Dance and Stevie not stepping away from music. She self promotes all the time. Right now she is trying to align herself with Taylor Swift to remain relevant. Sometimes I wonder if when she is gone, will the music really stand the test of time. However, Rumors is all over the year-end charts this year. That album has stood the test of time.

In a way, it’s not a fair comparison. To become popular in the 80s and 90s, country music hijacked the classic rock sound. All they did is add some fiddle to it. Since, country music has more dedicated fans, they took and never allowed classic rock to reach the pinnacle again. Country music became the most popular genre of music.

It's not a fair comparison. Rumours is the NINTH best selling album of all time(hard to believe Shania Twain has outsold it!). Something like that is something that EVERYBODY owns, or has at least heard a 1000 times.

I don’t think the Eagles should be on the list. Greatest Hits should’nt count.

Don't be a baby. Greatest Hits was the TOP selling album of the 20th century. The TOP SELLING ALBUM OF A F*CKING CENTURY.

By the way, Hotel California is ALSO ahead of Rumours.

FM was always my favorite, but they were always sucking the fumes of The Eagles. Face it, The Eagles won the game against them.

I agree. It's kind of cheating. I was surprised Eagles GH surpassed Thriller in the US.

Worldwide is a different story. I love Eagles but I'm glad Thriller and Dark Side of the Moon surpassed Eagles GH worldwide.

Don't be a baby? It's a Greatest Hits. There is a difference there. It's the best from several different albums. Rumors is a masterpiece and Hotel California only passed Rumours when they added streaming numbers and considering the popularity of country, it's no wonder why it surpassed Rumours. Rumors beat Hotel California for the Record of Year grammy and it was also the top selling album of the 1970s.

Just like $tevie, seeing history through rose colored glasses.
Your argument sounds just like $tevie insisting that Silver Springs was on Rumours(I loathe the remaster that includes SS, BECAUSE..... IT...... WAS..... NOT..... ON..... RUMOURS). Rules are rules. You can't rewrite them after the fact. Go bitch to Irving. I guarantee he'll back his #1 client(hint- it's not $tevie).

I think you mentioned the key word. Regardless of the albums we compare to, Greatest Hits could be great (Eagles, Queen, Elton, etc.). But they are not masterpieces. Regular albums are. So, I can't question that GH may be top sales, numbers are numbers. But they should have a separate ranking.

Back to the topic. I voted No because all the females listed sucked then so they suck now, especially Melissa. If anything I can stomach Shawn Colvin and Patty Griffin better. The 90s were supercharged with alternative rock and folk singers were dull and boring.
