Thrown down... like a barricade...
I made a remix of Thrown Down, wanted to share it here.
https://goo.gl/C9DvGC Also was thinking as I worked on it -- what a move by Stevie, LOL. "Here Lindsey -- a new song and it's about you, and you're gonna play on it and produce it and everyone's gonna hear even more about us and what could have been..." I was also wondering if it was about a specific rekindling that happened when the band reunited in the mid 90s. Like, did these two start to get more intimate again but yet again it didn't work. Her character seems older and more knowing, and "he fell for her again..." |
I love this mix! Just wish I could find a way to download it, I never have any luck with Soundcloud!

To me, Thrown Down does seem to be about their relationship between the time Lindsay left after Tango and the Dance tour. It seems from the lyrics that it was about Lindsay showing Stevie that he could be trusted with her songs, or that they could work together again. "Maybe now he could prove to her/that he could be good for her" and "I've shaken your faith in me, no/you've shaken my faith in everything else. A decision that no one made and now you're going home." "Night by night... he held her hands, she listened to what he had to say" makes me think she felt much better about working again with Lindsay, and vice versa, after performing on tour "night by night" for the Dance, to the point that she was willing to record Say You Will with Lindsay.
Obviously, that feeling of good will passed after they made that album :( |
WOW-love the remix! Thanks for sharing.

Hey bwboy - thanks, that's a really insightful take on the song. I hadn't thought about it like Stevie could be writing about their complex and intimate bond as artists and co-creators/bandmates who are also ex'es... I assumed it was about a new twist in their personal/offstage relationship dynamics.
That last verse ("Well, you can dedicate your pain to him...") doesn't sound like they landed in a good place... but then the main chorus is more hopeful. And it's true they have gone on tour together, since then, on and on... "night by night." JimSATX, try anything2mp3 -- their website is simple and I've downloaded all kinds of tracks from Soundcloud using it. Thanks for the kind word! |
Amazing!! Do you have more remixes?!
|
Wow! Great job...not what I was expecting but I really enjoyed it!

Thanks! To twinmatrix -- there are 3 others on the same Soundcloud account (LanternLights), one ("Angel") is a Stevie track, the other two are Christine... and I'm still learning/beginner level so Thrown Down came out better than the others.

As someone here once mentioned, throwing "down" a barricade would imply the barricade is broken and easily breached. Throwing "up" makes more sense, although obviously doesn't sound as nice as a lyric.

BlueLantern, thanks for a great thread and for allowing me to nerd out on this topic. I really like Thrown Down and always saw it as a positive and optimistic song about Stevie and Lindsey's relationship, at least at that point and time. |
it's not entirely a mystery; in the Destiny Rules doc she says that it's about "my relationship with Lindsey and how the barricades of time have always gotten in our way" I take this to mean that the events of the past always come back into play. She's said in the past that at various times they've said things to each other they can't take back and once those things are out there you can't forget they were said.
I took the 'sit outside his door and wait/dedicate your pain to him' as being like, well, you could do these things to try and make it work/make it up to him but realistically we're gonna have to keep stepping over these same barricades. |

As bombaysaffires said Stevie talked a bit about it in the Destiny Rules doc, you can hear the bit here:
She hasn't talked abut it much in interviews, I know only these two quotes: [On the line 'You're not like other people/You do what you want to do']'That line sums Lindsey [Buckingham] up,' says [Stevie] Nicks with a laugh. ''But he loves it. He loves the fact that I write about him. It makes him happy.' - The Boston Globe, 4-18-03 "'Thrown Down' is about Lindsey [Buckingham]," [Stevie] Nicks admits, "but I wrote that around the time of the Dance tour in 1997. Let's just say he continues to be a well of inspiration, which is terrific. - The Independent, 4-18-03 However I interpret it as the relationship between Stevie and Lindsey being capable of "throwing down" the barricades of time still giving them insights about each other even after all this time, but it's a double edged sword because it means that at the same time it unearths all the old unresolved resentments. |
