Eeriest Gold Dust Woman wails
In honour of Stevie's birthday, I went on a listening spree and discovered two of the eeriest live recordings I've ever heard - Gold Dust Woman NYC '77 and Philadelphia '77. Stevie sounds like a haunted tea kettle. I love it.
Does anyone have any favourite examples of spooky Gold Dust Woman wails (or, well, from any song)? |

P.S. She did a bit in Oakland and Providence. |
Also, don't forget the wailing/chanting at the end of the Rhiannon during the 75-79 performances (noted she had to stop doing it halfway thru the Rumours tour but did it sparatically thru the Tusk tour)

Well I like The Dance version best. I think it's because by that time, Stevie had really been through the whole rehab process. And you can tell by her delivery.
When I saw her perform it last year, it was quite eerie and as if she was channelling Janis Joplin. With that song in particular, it felt like a connection to that era - with Stevie being a living link. People next to me seemed to think that she was drunk or high when doing the song. I don't think so, because she quickly snapped out of it by the next number. But that's probably a song where it all comes back to her. |

Nah I don't think she was UTI or anything. It's just what the song is about. And she's older, less nimble, and her eyesight isn't so good.
I was at the Adelaide show. I enjoyed it more than the show eight years previously. It was a nice day after early fog. The band were staying at a hotel overlooking the river. The misty scene would probably have suited Ms Nicks fine. The show was at a sports stadium a la Tusk. It was close to Halloween with a full moon lol. They played very well. I think because they'd had a mid tour break so they were rested but by Adelaide they were warmed up. I think it's amazing that after everything, she is so disciplined these days. It must get very tiring at times. |

So it's supposed to look like this! |

But of course she isn't. To begin with, it'd be too big a risk with those big high heels. I hope that neither Stevie or Madonna end up like Marlene Dietrich - falling off stage in her mid seventies and breaking her thigh. It's crazy how prophetic the GDW song became. Amazing that a band who were once so on the edge could now be so professional and on their game. Even they seem surprised that it is still possible. |
