What a great interview! I never heard it before, and I told my mom ~ who is the biggest Dylan fan about the bit of her telling him in 86 how she would someday want to cover "just like a woman".. He had no expression when she played it for him in 94", but approved and told her "You are one of the few women I know who follows through with anything" lol Cracked me up

"Does it go through your head when you are recording these songs that you have to play them live"?

"Yes it does".

real answer: No, it doesn't, because I will only play 2 or 3 of them live anyway. :)

Nice interview that I have never heard before from the Street Angel era. She sounds so clear minded and back to her old self. Not like The Other Side of the Mirror days. I was a little surprised that the interviewer didn't ask who or what the songs were about. He mostly stuck to the music aspect. Refreshing.

:laugh::laugh: Right???!!! Things are always "different" when she's put on the spot or being recorded. Like in the Destiny Rules documentary when she's telling Lindsey to choose his harmony wisely because he will need to be able to hit the notes comfortably when they "perform it live". Yeah. That happened, didn't it?

in all fairness to her she did say there are songs people have to hear , how many times has she heard I will die if you don't play Landslide ? or you have to play Silver Springs it was my mothers favorite song and we played it on a loop when she passed from this world and I named my Cat ,Rhiannon , few people will ask for Battle of the Dragons or Straight back or have a connection to an album cut

Great interview. Thanks for posting. Street Angel was just released. I love Street Angel for many reasons and is my 4th favorite Stevie album.
The interviewer does a good job but he is wrong with the Mac's interpretation of Stevie's solo career. Yes Lindsey was probably a bit jealous at first at her huge success. But the Mac plays Leather and Lace live during one Mirage stop and Lindsey is heard playing Edge of 17 during Mirage rehearsals. Later on the Mac put Stand Back as a staple in their shows and even Has anyone ever written anything for you was played by the Mac. I don't think the Mac ignored her solo career or thought she was not good as he hints at.
The interviewer is good that he picks up on how Rock N Roll Street Angel is from her previous 2 albums.

As many times as I've watched DR I can't for the love of me remember her saying this to him lol... When does she say it?

Yes. It's there. You just have to look for it. Of course, my version was of the original broadcast on VH1, which has a bit more footage than the released DVD. This scene was in reference to his doing back up vocals on "Illume", which was never performed live.

I remember him joking that he would just press a button (with recorded parts) to hit the high notes in concert.

When they are recording. She is at the console and he is in the little room they used as a vocal recording booth. She's listening on the headphones and then they are talking when he's done singing.

That was during the tour rehearsals footage. I believe though he was talking about Come, wasn't he? The "nobody else is doing it" screaming part.....he mimicked pushing a button and then just lip synching the words....

That was great! I love how positive she sounds, and clear headed, and I love how much the dj loves Street Angel. It's great to hear Stevie talking about making the album, and the bits about The Other Side of the Mirror were interesting, too.

It's cute that she hates her songs being called 'pop'.

I agree. I love how positive she sounds. This is one of the few interviews where she does not trash Street Angel. Street Angel is a fantastic album. I think she soured on it because it was her first solo album that failed to chart a hit single or land on the charts. Plus her tour was cut short because she was so down about her weight and critics.
I have always loved Street Angel and it holds up so much even today. Street Angel is guitar primary guitar based and is not "pop." It has splashes of country like Blue Denim and Rose Garden and has good rock songs as well. I hate when Stevie sings other people's songs but she nailed Maybe Love will change your mind. She sings it from the heart and Stevie does not sing love songs.

Street Angel has always been a intriguing album for me. It was a departure from her previous albums; it had a more rootsy, earthy sound. Stevie was at the crossroads at this time in her life -- estranged from Fleetwood Mac and working with a new producer she did not get along with. Also, Stevie's stature in the market was a bit shaky. Considering the circumstances at the time, the album is a very interesting part of her legacy.

I don't recall her tour being cut short. She did express her dismay about her weight, but her voice was very strong, and her shows were well-received. Stevie didn't write Maybe Love, but to my knowledge there are no previous versions of the song, so this is not a cover song.

I think most of her negativity about the album has more to do with the negative experience working with her producer, and the extra effort it took to "fix" it. By the time the album was released, she had emotionally disconnected from it. So it's so unusual to hear her in this interview talking about it in relatively positive terms.

When this was released, I did up a transcript of it. For those who have difficulties with hearing or those who just want it for reference:
