Adele's Fleetwood Mac Influence
 

Has anyone listened to Adele's new album yet? Specifically, the Target exclusive edition. There's a song on there called "Why Do You Love Me" that is really Mac-like, to my ears. It borrows heavily from Gypsy in particular, in terms of the arrangement and even the chord progression.

I would put a link, but since the album is so new, I think they're taking it all of YouTube really quickly.

Anyway, I just thought it was neat. I know she was emotional about meeting Stevie, but I'd never really heard any FM influence in her music before until now.

I didn't get the Target bonus track and I don't think the music on my regular album seemed FMish to me. If there'd been harmonies maybe it would have. Still some of the lyrics did remind me of Stevie, like "it was just like a movie". Reminds me of how Stevie described the five Macsters when people see them together.

And, of course, Adele focuses on break ups. I mean the concepts are universal, every singer has sung about them, but when I hear "Love in the Dark" and leaving someone you've outgrown, I think of "Love Changes."

I don't think this borrows from Gypsy that heavily, though there are similarities. But since Adele wrote the song with longtime Stevie collaborator Rick Nowels, I think any Mac influence comes mainly from him.

It basically sounds like Gypsy sped up & transposed with a different melody on top, to me. The instrumentation is EXTREMELY similar.

good point, though I'd say the Stevie influence not FM influence, since Rick didn't write anything done by the Mac

I was listening to the album today and I definitely see a certain FM influence in some of the songs. I love Adele but I don't think her lyricism is as strong as any of the FM songwriters. I think it's more in the way the instruments "service the song" as Lindsey might say. Aside from the huge pop hits, many of her songs have the bare minimum of instrumental in the background, and what's there really seems to count. It's very Lindsey to me, although in a very different style.

I see a Lindsey-type "FM influence" in Million Years Ago, in the guitar strumming and raw voice. There was another one I noticed as well but I've forgotten which one it was.:p

Don't forget that Adele will be on NBC tonight at 10PM.

*just thinking I could imagine Adele singing Edge Of Seventeen.

I actually hear a lot of Sinead O'Connor in Adele's songs with the impassioned, emotional delivery. And the R&B singers of course.

One Direction have a new song called 'What A Feeling' that is supposed to sound like Fleetwood Mac. Harry Styles was seen at their show this year of course. One Direction have taken sounds from a lot of classic bands that were around before their fans were born. I hope that the fans are at least aware of the influence and it encourages them to listen to that music.
