Most Haunting Song!

I was just wondering what Stevie song(s) does everyone think is the most haunting to them. Mine would have to be Straight Back. The first time I heard it I got chills.

Haunting... Forest of the Black Roses, Silver Springs, demo of All the Beautiful Worlds, the demo of She Still Loves Him, demo of If You Were My Love, .., I can't pick one! In general I prefer the demo's because of the beautiful haunting wail of her voice back then.

I almost completely forgot about Forest of the Black Roses. That one is incredibly haunting. That piano and her voice. So somber yet haunting.

Straight Back is amazing.
Doing the Best I Can

and Beauty and the Beast live.

demo-wise
Space Needle & Forest of the Black Roses

KarmaContestant 11-20-2015 06:18 PM

Like a charmed hour and a haunted song? Those ones are the best.

Gold Dust Woman
Sisters of the Moon
Kind of Woman
Rock A Little (but it's got to be the uncut version, and not the chopped up bit that was on the album)
Mirror Mirror
Battle of the Dragons

I have to agree that Doing the Best I Can is so powerful and haunting. You can just feel the intensity as the song progresses. Good choice StreetAngel86!

Storms. There's also this one note in Beautiful Child that really got me the first few times I listened to it.

pryderi 11-20-2015 07:53 PM

Sisters of the Moon (more like halloween haunting)

sorcerer999 11-20-2015 10:01 PM

It's always hard to pick just ONE, isn't it? :D

I would definitely go with "Sisters Of The Moon" being my number one choice (Classic Fleetwood Mac and Classic Stevie!) followed by "Rock A Little" (and like KarmaContestant said, it MUST be the uncut version) and then rounding out my top three is "Battle Of The Dragon", which is the one "atmospheric" song of hers that can take me through a million different emotions on any given day. I adore it!

Other honorable mentions are "All the Beautiful Worlds", "Sable On Blonde", "Dreams", "24 Karat Gold", "Moonlight" and "Blue Lamp".

Rock a Little (Extended Version), Cecelia, Straight Back, Sisters of the Moon (ANY live versions from '79-'82) and 24 Karat Gold.

I would also say Christian (Spinning Wheels) and Sable on Blond, but they're more haunting in a dreamy way I think. I can't explain it, but it's not a "dark" haunting, but like an introspective dream-like haunting.

Yes! Battle Of The Dragon is epic! I can't believe this one ended up on a soundtrack. I would have definitely saved it for my album if I were Stevie.

Sable On Blonde is another stunner. Something about it just seems so eerie and haunting. An all time fave!

About 15 years ago I made a mix CD (in the days before iPods) and called it "Nicks Witch Mix". All songs included had to be "witchy", "atmospheric" and "haunting" and commercially available (no demos). In the years following, every time Stevie or Fleetwood Mac would release something new, I would add more songs to the mix. As it stands now, the mix looks like this...

1. Sisters Of The Moon (Single Version)
2. Blue Lamp
3. Illume (9/11)
4. Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win) (Single Version)
5. How Still My Love
6. Gold Dust Woman
7. If You Were My Love
8. Dreams
9. 24 Karat Gold
10. Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)
11. Rock A Little (12" Extended Version)
12. Battle Of The Dragon
13. The Nightmare (12" Remix Version)
14. Sable On Blonde
15. Rooms On Fire
16. Straight Back
17. Planets Of The Universe (Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" version)
18. Sorcerer
19. Gypsy (Extended Version from "The Chain" boxed set)
20. All The Beautiful Worlds
21. Nightbird
22. Bombay Sapphires (Alternate Version from the TISL Acetate)
23. Smile At You
24. Doing The Best I Can (Escape From Berlin)

I realize that the alternate version of "Bombay Sapphires" isn't commercially available (it was my one "cheat" in the playlist) but I prefer this version to the one that made it on the album. Stevie harmonizing with herself is SOOOOO much better than Macy Gray's "attempt" at harmonizing. I also love the second bridge here ("Well that's my dream...") that for some reason didn't make it onto the TISL version.

Okay, so I may have to steal this "Nicks Witch Mix" and make my own mix CD. Great selection Dave.(And yes I still make mix CDs lol)...AND, as you know, I'm an artist myself and I frequently record my demos on a tape recorder first before recording to an 8-track. (God I feel old) Anyway, I agree about the Bombay Sapphires version. "Well that's my dream...is my favorite part of that song.)

The chorus of the studio version of Silver Springs would be my pick. From the first time I heard this back in 1977 when I heard it on a juke box as the b side to GYOW as a kid to today....still gives me the chills.
