Stevie's 1991 MTV Asia promos
I have always loved this interview. The interviewer is so annoying with her questions. Some of them are dumb like "what was the first song you ever sang?" Stevie is pretty much zonked out here. But I am posting this for the ending which is so freaking funny. At 20:45 the interviewer says "that's it" like the interview is over but then says "we are just going to do the promos" Look at Stevie's expression. She looks to someone on her right like "you never told me there was going to be promos! I'm going to kill you" Her eyes say it all LOL
Then the stupid interviewer keeps telling Stevie to say a bunch of promos over and over. At the end when they remove her mic, she puts her fists in the air probably wanting to hit someone. I feel bad for her but it is sort of funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oCdw4QF17k |
I used to see these videos back in the day and had this idea that Stevie was kind of stuck up because she kind of looked like the people interviewing her were just beneath her. I actually fell in love with her all over again in the late 90's when The Dance came out because she seemed to really love performing and seemed so genuinely appreciative of still having a career. I didn't know until later that the Klonopin had her totally zonked out during the 90's.

This is my first time viewing this interview! Thank you so much for posting!
Stevie's response to the first question about lyrics she can't understand is so funny... "You make a real point [of eloquently pronouncing words]." "Yeah. And especially when I sing!" Because half the time I can't understand what she's saying. "I would not buy a smashed 60,000 guitar if it belonged to Benjamin Franklin." The way she gets so animated talking about watching MTV for the first time around 9:15. And I definitely noticed that expression before she did the promos... I think that was her going "I'm not an actress!" as we've heard her say many times before. And her thoughts about MTV in general are really interesting... She was spot-on in predicting MTV's extensive anti-drug campaigns, for instance. And more broadly, about how a really good video can elevate a song but that videos are unnecessary in general for music. I'd love to read her letter to Jon Bon Jovi. I hope he kept it and treasured it like she said! I think her expression throughout the interview got better... She started out looking kinda zonked and unhappy but seemed to get more animated as the conversation went on. The promos looked really tedious. I loved her smile when she was promoting her own album. I really appreciated her candor in the interview. And the little fist thing at the end is adorable! |
yuck she seemed slow and depressed
