"The Chain" question
 

Did somebody here say Lindsey says f**k at the beginning of "The Chain" and it was left on the record or an I mistaken?I've listened several times and for the life of me I can't hear it.Is it specific version of "The Chain"?Is this true or an I having a senior moment?

If you turn up the volume really loud and listen carefully, it sounds more like a sharp breath. But you can hear it. :)

Wow, I will have to listen. I don't recall ever hearing this.
I love little known music mysteries like this.

Did you know the "Turn it up" at the beginning of Sweet Home Alabama was a mistake? The singer was talking about the music in his headphones before singing. After listening to the song, they thought it sounded cool to leave it in the song.

And Beat it from Michael Jackson. The door knock before the guitar solo was also by accident. There was a janitor that was knocking on the door to clean the studio and it was picked up on tape. They decided to leave it in anyway.

During the 20 year anniversary of Rumours it was described how they almost lost the entire album since all the recordings were on tape. There was no digital in those days. And they played the tape so many times that it no longer had a crisp sound. They they had to mix the original tape with the new additional tape with the overdubs and other things together. I wonder if this sound is part of this process.

I also have a question about The Chain...

I was listening to Stevie's original Chain demo (before it was cut up and adopted into what we know today).

I'm hearing some similarities with 'Play With Fire' by The Rolling Stones.
Is it just me or does anyone else think she could have been influenced by this?

Thanks for those little tidbits of R & R trivia! I too love to find out things that have been there for years and never revealed.And did anyone try to hear the glass breaking in the background during GDW?I did and I had to listen to it 5 times to actually hear it as it was so discreet.So discreet that I can't figure out why they felt it was even necessary.Must have been the coke....:D

Yeah, they had to make an emergency backup copy of the tape since they'd worn the magnetic part of the tape almost completely away.

Also on Jackson Browne's Running On Empty album, a few songs were recorded either in a hotel room or on the touring bus. In one song, I forget which, you can hear the driver down-shift in the background.

On "A Day In The Life" (from Sgt Pepper) Mal Evans (one of the Beatles inner circle) set an alarm clock to signal the orchestra to end the big build up in the middle of the song. They just left the sound of the alarm clock going off in the final mix since it fit McCartney's next line..."Woke up, fell out of bed..."

Don't remember the song, but on the Rolling Stones' Satanic Majesties Request album, there's somebody snoring at the end of one of the songs...it was Keef. He'd fallen asleep during the recording of the song and started to snore...they left it in the mix.

I love reading this kind of stuff.

That's a great demo of The Chain.I never heard it before and never would have expected the demo to sound so drastically different from the recorded version.Now I have a "chain" when I wanna mellow OR rock out!Much thanks!:angel:

I think it's very noticeable and upfront in the mix. You had to listen 5 times? Or did you instead listen to the version without the glass break the first 4 times? :D

Cool that you find it. I did put this on You Tube, to remotely play it for a distance friend.

This version is probably polished up a bit, since it's commercially available on the 35 Years of Rumours Box-set which was released 2012.

On topic: The fact that the F-word can be heard at the beginning of The Chain has been discussed ever since 1977 if I'm not mistaken. I believe not all pressings of the album has it.

I love both the original Chain and Keep Me There and would have been more than happy with both of them as individual songs (though I suppose they wouldn't have both been able to fit on Rumours). Like everyone I love the final version of The Chain but I do think they used up two really good songs to create a truly great one. It was a brave move to 'throw away' the Keep Me There vocals- I love the bluesy feel it had.

I was wondering the same. I've always heard it. Sometimes I hink I have overly sensitive ears though. I hear things in the distance no one else can. When I listen to music I hear each instrument seperately and distinctly (even electric bass which is notoriously hard in many cases for people to pick out. Granted I've played bass line instruments- bassoon, bass so that's likely part of it) but I'm the kind of person who is always going "OMG, did you hear what the guitar did there? Did you hear that whisper?" And friends are like what? But the glass seems pretty dinstinct.


Now I need to go listen to The Chain again. Pretty sure I know what you're all talking about but someone said it sounds like an intake of breath which is what I was hearing more than the word. Rock music is so bad for the kids, you know. :P

I always find the Tusk album and women do the demos from around that time so fun to listen to because you can totally pick up on what was recorded in Lindsey's bathroom or other weird little things he did. It's half a game for your ears.
