Album version of Blue Denim is horrible

Just my opinion. Go and listen to it then listen to the version that's on the Enchanted box set. The Enchanted version is better by leaps and bounds.

It's always been interesting to me how strongly people feel about the Street Angel song mixes on the Enchanted Box Set vs the Street Angel album itself. The differences are just so subtle to my ears. Yes, the box set versions sport a cleaner, more expansive sound. But I have to listen to the individual songs back to back intently to note the differences.

I have to agree with louielouie2000. Plus I never really cared for the song with its clumsy lyrics.

I agree. Most of the differences that I do hear are in the opening instrumentation....but I like them better, all around, than the album mixes.

What is *really* fascinating about statements that the mixes on Enchanted are better is that they are, supposedly, the original mixes that Stevie was so distraught over releasing after she emerged from Klonopin detox.

That always seemed weird to me, too: if she was so distraught over the mixes, why use them on Enchanted? I love her contradictory nature but it certainly is ummm...contradictory!

I disagree, Blue Denim is a great little song and would've been all over the radio had it been released 10 years earlier. Both versions are just fine to my ears.

The mix from "Enchanted" is far, far more dynamic and brings out the drums and percussion much more clearly, which gives the song a serious groove. Stevie reported that this version was how she envisioned the song sounding all along (ditto to "Destiny," "Rose Garden" and the "Street Angel" song).

I wonder how the album would've fared a bit better (and be remembered much more favorably by Stevie) were it given a crisper, more compressed mix from the start.

So does that mean that the Enchanted mixes of the SA songs are not the early mixes she didn't like after detox, but other alternate versions?

Same here. I grew to really like the SA album over the years. As a matter of fact, I prefer it to TISL and IYD.

You have invoked the furies of the whole Ledge with that line!!

This song is just a guitar rift and a chorus, and the guitar rift is the best part. It's just an idea for a song.

I don't know about the "groove" part but, I agree with your first statement. The problem I have with the Enchanted mix is that is seems a lot more "adult contemporary" than a rocker, plus, it fades out too soon. The single remix is my favorite.

TheWILDheart 12-11-2014 10:01 AM

I was never mad on either the Enchanted or Street Angel mixes of the song. I absolutely love love LOVE the Chris Lord-Alge single remix though. It has so much more punch than either the Enchanted or SA album version. Same with "Maybe Love".

snroxman 12-13-2014 10:51 AM

Agreed. The Chris Lord-Alge single mixes are the best! Both are always on my Stevie playlist.

In the cannon of Stevie's solo albums, I like Street Angel because of its distinction from her other albums. It has an earthy sound, as well a dramatic back story about the difficulties and conflicts Stevie had with her producers. It was a very transitional and tumultuous time in her life. Sure, there are songs on the album that may not be her best, but all albums (from anyone) have a sound or songs that are subject to the matter of opinion.

The substandard execution of the artwork/graphic design, inflicted by hack job Chris Nicks, did the album no favors.
