Rhino Remasters of Mirage, TITN, Live
 

Has anyone come across these before? before I fork out the money, does anyone know if they're actually remastered, or just higher quality of the original CD releases? It's the fact the label is listed as Rhino/Warner Bros that has my attention piqued!

At first I thought it to be a less than legitimate site, but Yoko Ono is endorsing them in the release of John Lennon's albums...

Were these three albums ever fully remastered, but never released? I know some remastered tracks have surfaced on The Very Best of...

I bought two albums, Live and Tango In The Night. The cool thing about HDTracks is that you can choose the format (AIFF, ALAC, FLAC, WAV). An HDtracks Master Quality file is typically either 96kHz/24-bit or 192kHz/24-bit, meaning that it has twice the bit depth of your favorite CD and up to 9612Kbps of sonic information. An HDtracks file is not compressed like an Mp3, it contains even more sound data than a physical CD. An HDtracks file is a one to one exact digital copy of the master tape.

I can really hear the difference only when I play it via my hi-end 5.1 system. Even though the masters are not mastered at 5.1, it does have some serious punch over my other digital formats.

There are some slight differences. However, it is evident that hdtracks has only enhanced the CD versions that are already available. They are not true remasters as they do not have access to the original masters (as far as I can tell). To be honest, you can apply some of these enhancements on your own if you have a basic understanding of the Audacity, or any other digital editing, software.

I do hope that we get actual remasters of these albums at some point. Mirage is in desperate need.

the subject of this is terribly misleading. These are not remasters. And it does not appear they are from Rhino, but rather Rhino has the dist rights of the old masters? Am I mistaken?

Maybe a better title would be "High quality digital versions of album X, X, X"?

p.s. I think that if you already own the CDs that you already HAVE the lossless files right? What is the source for these files they are selling? Are they just upconverting the AIFF files?

That's right, they are not remastered, however as I already mentioned, HD Tracks always uses a master for their tracks. They source the masters from the label, which is why their catalog is not extensive. Their business model is very similar to Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs was for vinyl.
