New Orleans
I have been wondering for a long time about Stevie's lyric "I wanna brush by Anne Rice".What does this mean and why do people "brush by" her?And what was her comment on the IYD documentary about this where everyone laughed?I tried to get info on the web without luck.I did however learn alot about Anne Rice and her history.Every time I sing the lyric I think to myself,"what in the hell does that mean?":shrug:Any info will be appreciated.

New Orleans was Anne Rice's haunt. Brush by her like a ghost. Anne is known for the supernatural.

"Brush by" is a figure of speech which usually just basically means "walk by" in a crowded place. You know, where you might accidentally rub shoulders with someone walking in the other direction due to lack of space, hence "brush".
That's my interpretation anyway. She just wants a casual little everyday moment with Anne Rice. |

Yes, a ghost could "brush by" a person. It does sort of just mean pass-by-with-subtle-contact, I guess. Eesh. I seem to have a habit of sucking the poetry out of words by breaking them down. |
Stevie is singing about iconic things of New Orleans that she wants to experience again after the city was damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Anne Rice is a famous horror writer who lived in the Garden District of New Orleans until 2005. When Stevie mentions vampires in the song New Orleans, she's talking about Anne Rice's famous vampire books. When Anne Rice's most famous book, Interview With A Vampire was made into a movie back in the '90s, Stevie attended the premier. Stevie has admitted to driving by Anne's house when she's been in New Orleans, too. So it's safe to say Stevie is a fan of Anne's. She wants to "brush by" Anne because she is is a fan, and wants to see New Orleans restored to it's pre-Katrina state.
Anyway, here is Stevie at the premier of Interview With A Vampire: http://www.buckinghamnicks.net/sn/im...cksJan1995.jpg Also, when she talks about opening up her "gallery" in the song, she doesn't mean an art gallery. It's a term for the huge porches/balconies the local homes have: http://www.frenchquartercondotrends....ew-Orleans.jpg |

The French Quarter in New Orleans is one of the strangest. most exciting places I have ever been. I live in Houston, Texas (about 6 hours away) and visit at least once a year. Some parts of "The Quarter" are heavily crowded, to the point where you can "brush by" several people a minute. Other parts of "The Quarter" are desolate, calm, spooky and tranquil. If you are a Stevie fan, you will definitely love The French Quarter, especially the more quiet, historic parts. Since 2011, every time I'm there, I rent a fabulous 300 year old hotel room with a balcony, sit out on the patio with a cocktail and blast "New Orleans", by Stevie Nicks. I once stayed at the supposedly haunted Bourbon Orleans Hotel, former site of an orphanage where many children died from Yellow Fever. We heard a few rumbles in the night. Like Stevie, I have also walked by Anne Rice's house in the Garden District one more than one occasion. It is a grand old dwelling.

I am going there for my birthday this year, which is also Southern Decadence. Staying right on 5th and Canal!

It's kind of funny, because the chances of brushing by Anne Rice are zero. She has commented on that lyric line, explaining that she moved out New Orleans years ago. Stevie was a little late to the game! |

Oof, the pictures of Stevie from the Interview With A Vampire premier kill me. Really amazing how well she recovered.
I can't stop laughing whenever I think of Stevie on the IYD documentary talking about seeing Anne Rice's "weird house" in New Orleans; she is too funny. |
