ABBA Live at Wembley 1979 to be released on CD

Benny confirmed that the final 1979 Wembley concert will be released later this year as CD.
As, it is, no fixing

"Universal will release a live album, which is the last concert at Wembley, that we did. Whenever it was. 79?. As it was. Nothing fixed. Just sort of...we mixed it and it will come out later this year."

I hate to shatter your hope, but this will never happen. Both guys in the band have made it clear as to exactly why they will never tour again in past interviews. It's not about money either.

Look forward to it .It is the same setlist as when I saw them at the San Diego sports arena in Sept. 1979 except that they did not perform Waterloo at that show.ABBA in September and the Tusk tour shows in December ..what a way to end the 1970s!

Oh chucks ...Yes thats to bad .They could make a killing on tix sales. We thought that we never see the day that Chris rejoin FM.Now she did. I hope ABBA will reconsider. That will make alot of fans happy.

It won't happen. I don't think money is really an issue for them, considering they've sold 380 million records world wide and all had careers outside of Abba. Bjorn and Benny were both in successful Swedish bands before Abba, Agnetha and Frida both had solo careers in Sweden and around Europe before and after Abba and of course, the mamouth success of "Mamma Mia!" will bring in some serious cash.

Even at the height of their fame, the band never enjoyed touring. They've all said how much they enjoyed being on stage and performing, but hated the gruelling tour schedules and the long hours travelling.

Benny and Bjorn have explicitly said that a reunion won't happen. There have been plenty of opportunities, the most recent being the 40th Anniversary celebrations in London earlier this year, but it was decided they would not reform.

For a long time, Agnetha was the only member holding back a reuinion, but since her latest solo album and her return to the stage for the first time in 25 years, it looked like all members were more than capable of the reunion. Bjorn recently performed with the Abba Choir at the museum in Stokholm, Benny has consistently appeared with his folk band and Frida has never been away from the limelight, although she's more of an environmental activist now. But alas, it never happened and likely won't.

I love their live shows and am so excited for this release. I have their other live album, remastered and extended which pulled live tracks from 1977, 1979 & 1981.
The remastered version includes a killer version of "On and On and On".

The ABBA Live album was a bit of a disaster to be honest. Though the performances are fantastic, the heavy over-dubs were really horrid

Richard B 06-11-2014 02:58 PM

Their live stuff is not so common, so anything works for me. :D
But I think I know what you mean...but then I heard their live shows were very elaborate productions and sometimes I wonder if they used a backing track live. Not sure though. The liner notes show this:
Tracks 8, 12: , Australian Tour, March 1977
Tracks 1 to 6, 11, 13: Wembley Arena, November 1979
Tracks 7, 9, 10, 14: Dick Cavett Meets ABBA, April 1981

1 Dancing Queen 3:42
2 Take A Chance On Me 4:21
3 I Have A Dream 4:23
4 Does Your Mother Know 4:09
5 Chiquitita 5:21
6 Thank You For The Music 3:39
7 Two For The Price Of One 3:31
8 Fernando 5:24
9 Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) 3:16
10 Super Trouper 4:28
11 Waterloo 3:29
12 Money Money Money 3:19
13 Name Of The Game / Eagle 9:36
14 On And On And On 4:01

I love the tour they were on when they filmed ABBA: The Movie in 1977. I have that movie on blu-ray and really love it. Live n Concert is good too....but that In Japan DVD is ridiculous. I didn't like seeing ABBA like that. Jugglers and spazzy dancers performing in front of them....plus the lip-syncing to most of the tracks. Boo.

They never used over-dubs on stage. They had a 16-strong band with them on stage. But the ABBA Live album was completely reworked in the studio with drum and guitar overdubs, hence tracks from the 77 tour are loaded with 80's snare drums.

ABBA: The Movie is a DREADFUL film, but the live footage in it makes it so amazing. It's worth it just for that. I prefer watching that to the In Concert DVD, which was so heavilly cut down to fit the 1 hour TV special.

It's well known amongst the ABBA community that only a very short bit of film for the 79 Wembley concerts exists and it's all been released. However, all 7 nights were recorded for a possible live album, but the project was shelved once the band started work on the "Super Trouper" album in early 1980.

Abba In Japan wasn't lip-synched. It was live footage from the tour with the original studio version pasted over the top of it. It was only done for a TV special.

#sorry ;)

For a taster of what's to come, the BBC radio broadcast of the concert. It's edited down to an hour, but a good idea of what to expect

Only 3 tracks on that DVD are truly live. The rest are in a studio (no audience) and totally lip-synced. here's one of them...they're not even on mics and the song is no different than the real recording.

Oh, sorry Richard, I thought you were referring to the footage filmed from the 1980 Japanese leg of the tour.
