What unreleased songs would you consider finished?

This question came to me as I was reading everyone's suggestions as to what unreleased songs Stevie should give new life to. The song All the Beautiful Worlds came to mind. My belief is that this song was fully finished and ready for release. I suspect there must be others that were others that were also fleshed out, mixed and prepped for release, but were abandoned for whatever reason.

My preference would be to have those songs released as originally recorded, as opposed to entirely newer versions. There is plenty of other half-baked or unfinished material in her canon from which she can develop and refine into dozens of great new songs.

Gold and Braid

Space Needle

Baby Doll

Sanctuary

The Dealer

Mirror, Mirror

All The Beautiful Worlds

Joan Of Arc

Mirror Mirror is not a demo song! That's like saying One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star is a demo

Mirror Mirror became the "Blue Denim" B- Side

"Julia" is a finished song, and evidently came very close to being on the Bella Donna album.

Let's see... Off the top of my head I can think of Julia, The Dealer, If You Were My Love, Dial The Number. I'm sure there are a few more.

This is exactly how I feel and one of many reasons why I'm not really that excited about this new record. I loathed every single thing about In Your Dreams and absolutely cannot listen to it. I'd like to think this one will be much better but I'd rather go in with low expectations and have those raised than to go in with the same high hopes as I did IYD only to be severely disappointed yet again.

As for songs that I feel are in a "finished" state:

Julia
Sanctuary
The Dealer
If You Were My Love
Dial the Number
Don't Treat Me Like a Stranger
Lady From the Mountain (a proper version this time, please, so I can start loving this song again)

"If You Were My Love" (the piano demo) is one of my favorites, and one of the best in my opinion.

I HATED the finished version. It ended up sounded like something you'd hear on a tropical island in a restaurant shaped like a Tiki Hut. Her vocal on it was also lazy and uninspiring. I'm so glad it didn't end up on anything.

I think this is one of the "finished" songs that could be redone, and redone WELL!

I'd add Julia & If You Were My Love to that list. If You Were My Love was pretty much a finished song during the Street Angel era, and there are many finished outtakes of Julia from the 80s.

However, I disagree that Space Needle is finished. Sounds very much like a demo to me. Unless there's a version of it I haven't heard.

StreetAngel86 05-17-2014 05:58 PM

Joan of Arc
Dial the Number
Space Needle
All the Beautiful Worlds
If You Were My Love

seem to have the most "polished" versions

KarmaContestant 05-17-2014 11:26 PM

Sanctuary (just needed mixing)
The Dealer
Julia
Baby Doll
Dial the Number
One More Tomorrow
Don't Treat Me Like A Stranger
All The Beautiful Worlds
Belle Fleur (pretty close - needed mixing)
Gold And Braid
Chanel Chanel
If You Were My Love
Lily Girl
Smile At You
What Has Rock And Roll Ever Done For You
Jimmy Come Back
Tied Up In Promises
Love And War
Something Exquisite
Call On Me For Magic

These are what I consider pretty much finished. Some more than others, since several need mixing, but they're all fleshed out, fully realized songs that sound like they have the full band and *mostly* have backing vocals where appropriate.

There's also a full-band version of "Belle Fleur" -- from the Wild Heart sessions I think? -- that sounds close to finished. Except for one place where Stevie flubs the vocal and apologizes. :)

Not everything is a 'demo'

Not all of Stevie's unreleased songs that are completed are DEMO'S. I think this word is over used way way to much. Some songs are extended versions that haven't been released. Some are alternates that are officially NOT released songs. Some are totally finished versions that just didn't make it to that LP. I mean think of this maybe even the songs that we think of as demo's might not be? There are many songs that we have never ever heard the real demo's for: Edge of 17/Standback/RAL the list is endless. I think some songs are outtakes too. I do feel that songs like : All The Beautiful Worlds/Destiny (WH version)/Julia/The Dealer & others are completed versions but not released. I wish that she'd release some of them in the versions that they are as is. Its nice she wants to record them officially but like someone else mentioned in another thread it would be nice of the songs that she does release that she'd include another cd of the original versions (but better and more clear versions than the one's we have). I guess time will tell what we get. I am happy about it but some songs I just love the way they are. I do hope City of Hope and Blue Water make it I love both those songs. Anyway, just some thoughts to keep in mind.:D

Every song starts as a demo. Some evolve further and are abandoned. Others are fully fleshed out for potential release, but are shelved. Those are the ones that have the integrity to be released as is.

Stevie is not going to officially release raw working demos. What would be the reason? They are unfinished, and she is aware they are already in circulation. Only die hard fans would listen to subpar demo recordings, and we have them.

AnthonyMI 05-27-2014 09:56 AM

Let us not forget Reconsider Me was a total curve ball. Have any demos/work reels of this song ever surfaced?

Makes you wonder how many more songs like Reconsider Me were completed before the departure of Jimmy, let alone how many other "finished" tracks are sitting around.

To each their own, but I feel the majority of Stevie fans adore In Your Dreams. Stevie is proud of it, and I love listening to it. Is there not at least one song you can tolerate? Or do you dimiss the entire work?

Curious to know if there are other Stevie albums that you loathe?
