I read about this earlier... apparently he was a heroin addict who had been clean for 23 years, and then relapsed within the past year before entering rehab. It's always such a shame when we lose someone as talented as Philip- he was without a doubt one of the premier actors of his generation. I just can't ever imagine why anyone would touch heroin- it has claimed so many lives. :distress:

Philip Seymour Hoffman was an overrated actor--who did to Capote what Blanchett did to Hepburn. I'm surprised to read that it was only recently that he returned to heroin. I used to see him around the Village years ago, and he always looked like a homeless person. I'm sorry for his kids and for what may have been a deep well of pain he was treating with heroin. I just wish that as an artist he hadn't made so many nihilistic films that promoted hopelessness.

Sounds like a compliment to me. ;)

I can't think of anything I've seen him in other than Doubt, where he struck me as very capable. But I'm certainly used to hearing his name out in the world. Startling and saddening news, indeed.

Oh no - how sad. I watched Jack goes Boating just last week - he acted in it, and directed it. I really enjoyed it and thought it was a great film (good soundtrack too). :(

:(

No compliment. I'm always surprised people like Blanchett's Hepburn. I LOVE Katherine Hepburn--I think Blanchett plays her as a grotesque and a cartoon. James Toback argued that Kevin Spacey would have been more appropriate . Fortunately for Capote we have the magnificent and humane performance by Toby Jones in the great film Infamous to show us why PSH and his Capote was so wrong.

The guy I liked to hate.

I guess that made him a good actor.

I love Katherine Hepburn too. Maybe I need to see The Aviator again, because none of this makes any sense to me. Oh well!

I've liked every movie Hoffman was in, that I've seen - because he was a great actor - but I never really much liked *him*. His presence in a cast usually elicits a groan from me. Much like Johnny Depp.

Because it makes you feel absolutely incredible. Not condoning it, nor have I actually done it but I have done things in the same family that are 1 tenth the strength of heroin and can just understand the desire to feel that good. The risk scares me away. But the risks don't scare everyone away. Again not condoning just giving you a "why" louie

I don't understand it either. He must of had a death wish. I think a lot of people hope to die by accident.

I totally get it. People get into mindsets where they don't think long-term because their lives and mental states are such that it's just depressing for them, so they go into short-term-gratification-only mode, and try things that are awesome for a short while without worrying about the horrifying payback to come. It happens all the time. And it's very sad. But it does make sense to me. If you don't get it, it probably means you're a sweet and good person with a reasonably happy life. Cherish that.

This was such a huge loss. :( PSH was a great actor. He was terrific in The Savages, Boogie Nights, Almost Famous, etc.

I'm 51 now but when I was in my mid 30's I used to tell myself,"one day you are going to have to pay for doing all this smoking." I chained smoke cigarettes and I was a pot head. I was convinced it would be cancer but it turned into sleep apnea and asthma. This is how I have to sleep for the rest of my life. This pic is not me, but I have the same equipment.
