Your "go-to" Christmas Playlist

Hi Guys!

I thought it would be fun to post our "go-to" Christmas songs or playlists. List your favorites and maybe we can discover some new gems for our own playlists.

Here's mine. I play it every year.

1. "Holiday Road" - Lindsey Buckingham (not necessarily a Christmas song, but it fits, IMO.) Good, upbeat way to start the playlist.

2. "Winter Wonderland" - The Eurythmics. Catchy, fun tune.

3. "Jingle Bells" - The Ray Conniff Singers. These group of singers are from the 50's-60's. My Mom always played them so it's nostalgic, classic Christmas for me.

4. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" - The Pretenders. Love their rendition of this classic.

5. "Silent Night" (The live "Very Special Christmas" TV special version) - Stevie Nicks. WAAAY better than the recorded version, imo.

6. "Do You Hear What I Hear" - Bing Crosby. Classic Christmas.

7. "All I Want for Christmas" - Mariah Carey. Over-played at times, I know, but it's still good.

8. "Frosty the Snowman" - The Ray Conniff Singers. Again, nostalgic.

9. "Christmas -Baby Please Come Home" - U2. 80's goodness.

10. "Last Christmas" - Wham! George Michael is one of my all-time favorite artists, and this is my very favorite Christmas song. The video is a must-see.

11. "Do They Know it's Christmas?" - Band Aid. Tons of my 80's favorites on one song. I was estatic as a teenager when this song was released. I even bought the 12'" version.

12. "Step Into Christmas" - Elton John. Fun to listen to.

13. "Little Drummer Boy" - Neil Diamond. He's one of my favorite vocalist and this version is beautiful.

14. "I'll Be Home For Christmas" - Barbra Streisand. She has been a favorite of mine since I was 9 years old. Gorgeous vocals as usual for Barbra.

Recently, I purchased the new Mary J. Blige Christmas CD. It's really good, AND she has a beautiful duet with Barbra Streisand on it! ("When You Wish Upon a Star")

So what are some of your favorites??

Excellent idea-love this!

Your 2,4, 5,10, 11 are on my Christmas playlist (what good taste you've got!) along with

Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth : David Bowie / Bing. Always makes me teary.

Happy Xmas / War is over: John Lennon

Adeste Fideles: Anne Murray. I am not religious but something about this version...

God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman: Barenaked Ladies/ Sarah McLachlan

Feliz Navidad--always makes me sing and dance around. Such a happy song, but could be that it is still new to me (I don't remember hearing it in England).

We have been listing to a lot of the 'sounds of the season' digital music and hearing lots of interesting songs and versions. Fun for us and the kiddos.

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" -- Whitney Houston or Martina McBride
"O Holy Night" -- Josh Groban. I'm not really a fan of his, but I must admit his version is beautiful.
"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" -- Judy Garland
"Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow" -- Dean Martin
"Merry Christmas, Darling" -- The Carpenters :o

Stevie's Silent Night is number one and hope it gets played for my funeral.
I like all of the Xmas tunes on your list Jamie.I'm not fussy on holiday tunes.
I like old tunes from the 1900's to the current holiday tunes.

Anything from Elvis.

Jewel has a pretty good Christmas album out too.
Not to mention Clint Black.

From Jamie's list.

11. "Do They Know it's Christmas?" - Band Aid.

I love this tune.

I wish that Stevie or FM performed on this song.

Lindsey was a part of USA for Africa which I do know.

Basically any time I can play Bob Dylan's "Christmas in the Heart" is a good time. Even if it isn't Christmas!

nicole21290 12-11-2013 04:29 AM

It's not a Christmas song per se but any excuse to play it, to be honest...

River - Joni Mitchell

Many Christmas songs they play on the radio over here drive me up the wall - I think its because I've heard them sooooo many times, and some of them are also really bad. But I do love hearing Christmas carols - I never get bored of them. And I love the following songs.......

And this one is just beautiful, thanks for reminding of it...

Yes! I know it's "officially" not a Christmas song, but, I mean... it samples Jingle Bells for Pete's sake. I'd have it on my list too.

Kate Bush's 50 Words for Snow and Dead Can Dance's Within the Realm of a Dying Sun are both decidedly not Christmas albums, but certainly are "wintery" and get a lot of airtime at my house this time of year.

As for actual Christmas music, I'm a traditionalist. I go for old-school religious choral music. And, although I'm not crazy about supporting the LDS church financially, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir simply does the business best in this category. I am spotifying the heck out of those guys.

Well that's a bit weird.... for some reason I ended up you-tubing Kate Bush last night. I think I spotted one of her video's. So I now know about her snow album, and I watched a great interview where she was talking about Wuthering heights and she was only 19 years old - amazing women!

She is such a brilliant person! Her Snow album is sort of thematically the inverse of Aerial, if you're familiar with that one. It's worth checking out and is among my very favourites. It's quite minimalist, though. A lot of long, repetitive, melodically simple tracks. Not everyone digs it. But I think it might be the best thing she's ever done.
