The movie Gravity

If you look on rottentomatoes.com, you will see that this movie is getting some of the best reviews in 10 years. So far, its at 98% approval rating which is unheard of. Only 5 out of 207 critics didn't like it. Some are calling it a masterpiece.

So today I saw it and... I liked it for what it was. A straightforward, lost in space movie. However, to give this movie all the kudos it's getting just proves one thing; Hollywood's standards of excellence have lowered because they just don't make truly great movies anymore. This movie is no 2001 Space Odyssey, or Alien/Aliens or Star Wars. It's not even as good as Contact or Avatar. However, it's being set up to win the oscar for best picture.

What's worse is Sandra Bullock, who is a dubious actress at best, is being setup to beat Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep as best actress at the Oscars. Those two women have more talent in their toe jam than Sandra. Sandra does a good job, especially for her, but it's not outstanding. However, they gave her an oscar for a role that thousands of other actresses could of done a better job at, and they will do it again. She is America's Sweetheart, but the truth is she has made the Oscar voters and magazines too much money.

My review is nice little movie, but not spectacular or great at all. Some of the visuals are outstanding though.

I saw Gravity Saturday, and really enjoyed the movie. I disagree that Hollywood has lost it's standards of excellence...but I totally agree that there is just a lot of garbage out there, but it's a direct reflection of what Americans are willing to pay for. Hangover 5 anyone?

So I guess the problem, from my point of view, is the people watching movies, not the people making them. They're just giving the ticket buying majority what they want. After all, the United States a country that values convenience, simplicity and low price over all else - especially quality and depth.
