Stevie's album sales

Hello everybody!

I'm new to The Ledge so let me first present myself.
I'm a 20 year old French student (I may well be the only Frenchman here^^) currently living in Paris but I'll be moving to Vancouver in August. Yes, this means I won't be able to see Fleetwood Mac in Paris nor in Vancouver… I've been a huge FM and Stevie fan for a about a year now and The Ledge has been a huge source of information for me :)

I wanted to ask you if you had an idea of Stevie's album sales figures. I mean, we have the RIAA certifications but do you guys know what her total worldwide figures are? Fleetwood Mac has pretty accurate estimates - 100 million with certified sales of 70 million. But for Stevie solo I can't find anything besides RIAA certifications. Newspapers often say she's sold 140 million albums with FM, which would mean Stevie solo sold about 40 million, but that seems to be an inflated figure.

Have a great weekend! :)

This is information that I am always curious about, and I am always surprised that it is so hard to find these stats. You would think that a fan site like this would be a the easiest way to find album sales data?

WildHearted 03-30-2013 09:32 AM

Well, just talking US sales (what I Can find, anyway)...

Bella Donna - 4,000,000
The Wild Heart - 2,000,000
Rock a Little - 1,000,000
The Other Side of the Mirror - 1,000,000
Timespace - 1,563,000
Street Angel - 500,000
Enchanted - 172,000
TISL - 663,000
Crystal Visions - 348,000
Soundstage - 46,000
In Your Dreams - 188,000

Assuming that her albums like Bella Donna, The Wild Heart etc have sold some more since their last official certification, that puts her pushing almost 12 million in the US.

As far as other countries, this is all I can find -
In Your Dreams (countries other than US) - 312,000
Crystal Visions (Australia) - 35,000
Timespace (UK) - 100,000
TOSOTM (UK) - 100,000
Rock a Little (UK) - 100,000
The Wild Heart (UK) - 60,000

Which is like 700,000. But obviously, that's incomplete.

So based on this, I would think she would have at least sold about 15 million worldwide. But we may ~never know.

Thanks! 15 million seems like a realistic figure.
When you think about it, Stevie's solo albums haven't had a huge impact other than in the US so I guess it's logical that the bulk of her sales were made there. I find it surprising that she hasn't sold more in the UK given how popular FM was there. You'd think that she would have benefited more from their notoriety. I was also figuring that BD, WH and RAL were successful enough in Canada and Australia that in the two countries combined she could have sold a few millions.

She was part of soundtracks too.

Yeah, but those aren't her albums. She's just contributed a song on them, along with a dozen other artists. That'd be like factoring Hard Promises into Stevie's album sales because she sings on it.

So IYD has sold 312K outside US and 188K domestically? For a total worldwide of half a million? Wow.

That's what I've read.

However, I found this old thread:

Here is a look at Nicks' album sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan:

46,000, "The Soundstage Sessions" (2009)
348,000, "Crystal Visions... The Very Best of Stevie Nicks" (2007)
663,000, "Trouble in Shangri-La" (2001)
172,000, "The Enchanted Works of Stevie Nicks" (1998)
231,000, "Street Angel" (1994)
1,543,000, "Timespace: Best of Stevie Nicks" (1991)

Sales for albums released prior to the advent of SoundScan in 1991:
79,000, "The Other Side of the Mirror" (1989)
99,000, "Rock a Little" (1986)
200,000, "The Wild Heart" (1983)
855,000, "Bella Donna" (1981)

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), here are the certifications for Nicks' four pre-SoundScan era studio albums:

Platinum, "The Other Side of the Mirror"
Platinum, "Rock a Little"
2x Multi-Platinum, "The Wild Heart"
4x Multi-Platinum, "Bella Donna"

Totaling all of those up, that gives Stevie a total of 12,236,000 album sales domestically pre-IYD. And then factoring in what the 188,000 that IYD sold - that leaves us with 12,424,000.

So the ~12 million estimation for the US was pretty accurate.

mitzo 03-30-2013 03:14 PM

So the 12 million total is US only - I suppose at least 30% more if you added international sales?

Yeah I'd say she's sold at LEAST 15 mil worldwide but no more than 20 mil.

GoldDustBoy 03-30-2013 09:08 PM

Bella Donna is a few thousands away from selling 5 millions in the US alone. Calculating the worldwide sales of an 30+ years old record is very, VERY hard, but according to several sources (which I can't quote right now since I'm posting from my Nintendo Wii :) ) it sold 9-10 millions. I don't know how realistic this number is. It's funny, but I've got the impression that for the last 5 years Stevie's been slowly getting more and more attention here in Europe.

Wow I'm shocked that Enchanted nunbers are that low.

I wonder what these numbers will subtract when we subtract the multiple dozens of copies that we own.It probably nose dive.LOL...

Yeah, but since it's a 3 CD box-set, multiply that number with three.

Also it was expensive too and it was worth every penny of the $40 odd dollars that I spent on it.

I would really love to know the exact sales of 'In Your Dreams' in the U.S. as of now as the documentary must have boosted sales a bit so if anyone does know, feel free to post it!!! I would also like to know why 'Crystal Visions' has not yet been certified Gold by the RIAA even though it has sold approximately 500,000 copies by now.....
