Oh Daddy
I have a cultural question to ask of those who were around in the 70's (I was just a little kid then, heh heh). I notice that Christine uses the term "Daddy" in a few of her songs. Oh Daddy and Honey Hi are the two I'm thinking of. I can't recall if there were more. But my question is, was this a common term for women to use in referring to the men in their lives? Did it denote a certain type of relationship (younger woman, older man)? I recall hearing women call their husbands "old man" also. I was just wondering.

It's fairly common in blues music to use the term between lovers, even in contemporary blues. It's not blues, but Lindsey now says "daddy" in Trouble, even though he didn't when the song came out in the early eighties.
Certainly the term "sugar daddy" which Chris uses in her other song was popular in the seventies and even today, to refer to a rich lover Outside of a romantic relationship, I would say it was popular to call people Daddy or Daddy-o in a pop culture way through the fifties and early sixties. It wouldn't be a woman calling a man that, it was more like calling someone who might be proficient at something, a master, "Daddy," kind of like we say "like a boss" today. Michele |
I've wondered about the term "daddy" myself. I feel odd singing along to Sugar Daddy and Oh Daddy, though there my favorite Mac/Christine songs!

Sugar Daddy doesn't bother. However, I thought the song Oh Daddy was great but a little confusing.
