Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are calling it quits after being married for five years. The couple are also parents to a 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

Jonathan Wolfe, Katie Holmes' attorney has confirmed the news, offering this statement to People magazine:

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Shortly after Katie Holmes' announcement, Tom Cruise's rep told People, "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy."

It has also been reported that Katie Holmes filed divorce documents in New York anonymously on June 28 but seeks sole custody of their daughter, Suri. Holmes also seeks division of property assets and child support, but makes no mention of the prenup they created under California law before their wedding.

According to TMZ, the last time the couple were spotted together was back in February. While Cruise recently made the rounds for his latest movie, "Rock of Ages," Holmes was noticeably absent from the film's multiple premieres.

The two were married in 2006 in a castle in Italy, after the birth of daughter Suri.

While this is the first marriage for Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise has been married twice before, to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, with whom he shares two children.

This comes as NO suprise to me. In almost every picture ever posted of the two of them, Katie looked completely miserable.

When Katie was a star on Dawson's Creek I remember in many interviews she professed her lust for Tom. She hadn't met him then but she always said one day she was going to marry him.

Be careful what you wish for 'cause you just might get it.

I found it most interesting that she filed for sole custody of Suri, she's going nowhere without that kid.

He's more powerful than she is. He'll be awarded full custody.

She's the only biological parent of that kid from that couple....

RUN katie, RUN~ this marriage always seemed off to me~ being married to tom has made katie seem robotic~ i read she wants sole custody because suri is at the age to begin getting into Scientology & katie is very against it~

Interesting bit here... All of Tom's marriages ended when the wife was 33. ALL THREE OF THEM.

Cruise's first wife was Mimi Rogers, who was 31 when she wed 24-year-old Cruise in May 1987 and 33 when they broke up in 1990.

Cruise then married Nicole Kidman, 23, in December of 1990, and then separated in 2001, when Kidman was 33.

Holmes, 28, and Cruise wed in 2006, seven months after daughter Suri was born. And when word came Friday that Holmes had filed for divorce, those with a sense of Cruise history noted that Holmes was also 33.

Divorces, in each case, came when the woman in question had turned 34 (or so we assume with Holmes, who will turn 34 in December).

The coincidence didn't go unnoticed on social media, where no weird fact is too small to escape notice.

"How weird is it that Tom Cruise's three failed marriages have all ended while the women were 34?" tweeted Karen D'Souza. Others tried to find a connection between the number 33 and Cruise's well-publicized Scientology faith.

And others had fun with a different numerical aspect of the Cruise-Holmes marriage. Wrote Adolf McGough, "Shoutout to Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. Your marriage lasted 28.47 Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries marriages."

Apparently Cruise has been "blindsided" by Katie's filing for divorce. Memories of 2001 from the other side huh? Ha! Proof, if any were needed, that karma is a b**ch!
