Stevie Nicks, Jann Arden and Bill Clinton join Sarah McLachlan’s outdoor concert Singer hopes to raise $1 million for charitable School of Music By Francois Marchand, Vancouver SunJune 18, 2012 Read more: http://www.vancouversun.com/Stevie+N...#ixzz20GlOK1MJ VANCOUVER — Stevie Nicks, Jann Arden, Hedley and former U.S. President Bill Clinton will be part of the lineup for Sarah McLachlan’s Voices in the Park concert in Stanley Park on Sept. 15. McLachlan made the announcement on the future site of the event at Brockton Point during a press conference Monday morning, flanked by Vancouver park board chair Sarah Blyth and main sponsor Telus’ CEO Darren Entwistle. All proceeds from the concert will go to the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, a non-profit school that offers free music education for kids grades four to 12. “I would love to net $1 million,” McLachlan said in a post-conference interview with The Vancouver Sun. “I think it’s a reasonable goal. I might be setting the bar high, but I’d like to do that. “Getting to see the kids grow both musically and emotionally — there are a lot of amazing stories. One of the main focuses of the school, outside of learning music, is learning to be part of the community and learning about acceptance and respect. Everybody has an opportunity to shine.” The School of Music has been in operation for 10 years and moved into a permanent facility in the Mount Pleasant area late last year with the help of funding from the Wolverton Foundation and a $100,000 infrastructure grant from the City of Vancouver. McLachlan said students from the school will join her for the concert. Other confirmed acts include Vancouver party band The Boom Booms, Grammy-winning producer Chin Injeti and the Vancouver Men’s Choir. More artists will be announced later this summer. Voices in the Park will be the first ticketed concert to be held at Brockton Point in Stanley Park, the site of last year's Vancouver 125 Summer Live festivities. Tickets for the concert are priced $85 — $285 (service charges included), the higher priced tickets featuring VIP seating and other extras. A limited number of concession tickets for kids 12 and under will also be made available for $10 each. Ticket pre-sales start tomorrow via voicesinthepark.com. Public on sale date is Friday, June 22 via Ticketmaster. Concert producers brand.LIVE are hoping to make the event sustainable and are encouraging concertgoers to attend car-free by either walking, biking or taking public transportation to the site. A free bike valet service will be available. Shuttle buses will be operating from key transit points in Vancouver and from Park Royal in West Vancouver, with return fares priced $5. The concert will take place rain or shine. McLachlan teased about Bill Clinton possibly bringing his sax along, and she was obviously proud of the concert’s roster. “I think it’s a pretty great lineup: Diverse, unusual, lots of different age groups,” McLachlan said. “I definitely wanted this to be able to appeal to every generation, and I think we’ve done a good job.” |

CBC News, September 15, 2012
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/britis...l-clinton.html Former U.S. president Bill Clinton spoke to a crowd of about 10,000 people in Vancouver's Stanley Park on Saturday at a benefit concert for Sarah McLachlan's music school. The star-studded Voices in the Park concert — which also included performances by Jann Arden, Bryan Adams and Stevie Nicks — raised money for School of Music, which provides training and programs for at-risk youth. "People who perform ... they might not all become professionals, but they're all enriched by it," Clinton told the crowd. "I think it is very unlikely that I would have ever become president had I not been at school of music from the time I was nine until the time I was 17." McLachlan says the concert raised enough money to support School of Music for a full year. |

Sarah McLachlan, Stevie Nicks, Bryan Adams, Jann Arden, Bill Clinton, The Boom Booms and more When: Saturday Where: Brockton Point (Stanley Park) VANCOUVER -- Sarah McLachlan's Voices in the Park concert held Saturday at Brockton Point in Stanley Park and benefiting her School of Music in Vancouver was a resounding success. An estimated 11,000 music fans came through the gates for a full afternoon and evening of music and inspiration featuring performances by McLachlan, Stevie Nicks, Bryan Adams, Hedley, Jann Arden, and a special speech by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who spoke about the importance of music in his life. "I think it is very unlikely that I would have ever become President had I not been in school music (classes) from the time I was nine until the time I was 17," Clinton said halfway through the evening. "It made me see the world in different ways and it made me understand things in different ways. "I just came here to say thank you," he added, saying the concert would help fund his close friend's School for another full year. The performances throughout the day were no less inspirational. Vancouver's The Boom Booms turned up the heat early on with their big band brand of salsa-laced grooves as the crowd slowly made its way onto the site for the first ticketed event to be held there. Vancouver indie pop-rockers Hey Ocean! sang some glorious harmonies, leaving on a high note with single Big Blue Wave: "Sing until you have no voice/Sing because you have no choice..." Students from the School showcased what they have been learning thanks to McLachlan's organization by performing two lovely sets, and the Vancouver Men's Chorus did their turn doing a collection of show tunes and pop covers, including a lighthearted Call Me Maybe. If the main reserved seating area and the VIP chalets were all full in front of the main stage, concert organizers had smartly created a small stage -- the Park stage -- nearer the general admission area behind the sound booth, where Grammy-winning producer Chin Injeti got some groove going, lifting a page out of Kool and the Gang's book and rocking his bass with a lot of soul. The smaller stage was also where McLachlan made her first of two appearances, playing a few delicate songs on piano and guitar with the married duo of Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, who go by the name Whitehorse, including Bridge Over Troubled Water. The volume for McLachlan's first Park stage set could've benefited from a little more oomph, some at the back unable to hear. Doucet's powder blue suit was hands-down the best attire of the evening, and the duo would also return for a stomp-driven set later on. That one was plenty loud. "It's gonna snow!" exclaimed Jann Arden just as the sun was going down and the air was getting cool. Snow? Not likely. There was nary a cloud in the sky on that pitch-perfect late-September day, and great weather was something brand.LIVE senior VP Paul Runnals said accounted for the event being a success, many buying tickets during the last week before the concert. Arden, as usual, was both musical and comic relief, and her short acoustic set -- most sets were kept tight at 20-30 minutes apiece and the event ran like a well-oiled machine -- included a tender duet with McLachlan, the two singing I Would Die For You. McLachlan made the most of her collaborative opportunities throughout the evening, teaming up with Jacob Hoggard and Hedley for Perfect at the tail end of a set that was tailor-made for younger fans in attendance. Adams was, as is usual when he performs in Vancouver, in good spirits. With the help of his pianist Gary Breit, Adams sung favourites like Run To You, Here I Am and Summer of '69 in the same style he did at the Orpheum on the Bare Bones tour a few years ago. Straight to the point and as sharp as ever. Stevie Nicks opted for a full-on rock display focused on the classics: A cover of Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll (fitting), Rhiannon, Gold Dust Woman and so on. Garbed in the same shiny black-and-gold polka dot cape she said she bought for the Stand Back video in 1983, Nicks did the best she could to fight the evening chill -- "I'm from California," she said. Her voice was strained, her range much more limited than in her glory days. Nicks wields a bewitching kind of aura but the magic in Edge of Seventeen had all but vanished. In the end it was McLachlan's day, and she wrapped the proceedings in front of velvet drapes performing favourites like Sweet Surrender, Adia and I Will Remember You, the Vancouver skyline glittering in the background, her goal of raising $1 million for her School well in sight. |
[Chatting with Clinton, eh? Stevie, I hope you didn't scare him this time]
http://www.cknw.com/news/vancouver/s...spx?ID=1774509 Clinton speaks at Stanley Park concert VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) Marcella Bernardo | Email news tips to Marcella 9/15/2012 Former U.S. President Bill Clinton's address at a Stanley Park concert was brief, but applauded. Clinton appeared on stage with Sarah McLachlan as a favour to the Vancouver-based songstress, who has now raised more than a million dollars for her 10-year-old school of music. Clinton was the first person to bring the crowd of more than 10,000 to their feet. He spoke for less than two minutes, but during the address, pointed out the importance of having music programs in schools. Security backstage was tight for Clinton, who was spotted chatting with Bryan Adams - one of the final performers of the evening - along with Stevie Nicks and McLachlan. |
