Beach Boys Vs IYD

I preface this by saying, that the Beach Boys TOUR is doing awesome, numbers are very good, etc. And now the new album. I have NOT heard it yet, bought it yesterday. But ppl keep talking about how IYD didnt sell cause of the market of music. Well, see below, apparently the Beach Boys arent having any issues. I want to respectfully ask what ur thoughts are , meaning, BB are older than SN and FM, and if they are selling , then why didnt IYD sell ? and BB are on a smaller label IMO. This article and chart position for BB new album doesnt seem to jive with what ppl are saying about IYD NOT selling

The solid reviews the Beach Boys are getting for their new album, ‘That’s Why God Made the Radio,’ are paying off. According to Billboard, the record could possibly debut in the top three when the album charts are announced on Wednesday (June 13).

Billboard is reporting that the album is projecting to sell between 60,000 and 65,000 copies in its first week of release. This includes the pre-orders of nearly 20,000 albums as a result of the band’s performance on QVC on May 16. They predict that Adele‘s ’21′ and Alan Jackson‘s ‘Thirty Miles West,’ another album in its first week of release,’ will finish ahead of the Beach Boys.

The last time a Beach Boys had reached the top three was in October 1974, when ‘Endless Summer,’ a two-record set of their definitive early hits, topped the charts for one week. Even the success of the No. 1 single ‘Kokomo,’ couldn’t push 1989′s ‘Still Cruisin” above No. 46.

The Beach Boys are currently on tour in honor of their 50th anniversary. Tomorrow (June 10) they are playing the Bonnarroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn. They will wrap up the North American leg of the tour on July 15, after which they will go to Europe, the Far East and Australia through September

Stevie sold close to 50,000 in her first week, right? And debuted at #6. They're not blowing her out of the water by that much...

Not to mention that they have the hype of the 50th anniversary tour behind them.

I don't see how this really proves anything or even makes any sort of a statement about Stevie/her music, at all. Especially because the BB are hardly comparable to Stevie, except for both being veteran-type acts. Stevie's a female solo artist, the Beach Boys are a male-oriented band, etc etc.

Um... did you not read the part where they sold 20K copies by performing on QVC? To be honest, I think QVC could package cow s*** and sell a few thousand units in an hour. There are legions of bored/desperate housefraus out in Middle America, who have not quite mastered the concept of using the interwebs, who just buy stuff they see on TV because they have nothing else to do. I don't knock the BB for going down that road- they have certainly done more smarmy/sellout things back in the day. But I would have been extremely shocked and disheartened to see Stevie belting out a song while 1-800 numbers flashed across the screen. It's kinda desperate, ne c'est pas? Yes, Stevie would have probably eked out a slightly higher position on the Billboard charts if she plugged her new album on QVC, but at what cost to her integrity?

And, of course, diehard BB fans are finally coming out of the woodwork, now that it's no longer Mike Love, John Stamos, and a bunch of other hired guns. It's finally legitimate.

^^Do QVC sales count on Billboard chart positions? Walmart sales don't... or is Wal-mart exclusives that don't count?

mitzo 06-11-2012 05:44 PM

The BBs are much more a mass-appeal act than our esoteric songstress with the unusual voice and obsure lyrics. By the way, how many units of iyd have sold to date?

Pretty sure QVC will factor in the final tally for first week sales... Lionel Richie, I think did the same sort of QVC thing... And Walmart's numbers do count.. The rules were changed when the eagles last released an album exclusively at Walmart and the numbers sold for the first week were going to be huge... so they changed the rules.

Along with everything else that's been said, I don't think it would be doing nearly as well if Brian Wilson weren't involved. Die hard BB fans, (and I would venture to say there are more of them than FM or SN fans...don't hurt me), have a type of almost morbid curiosity about Brian Wilson and pretty much know that the most loved songs mostly were a product his musical genius. Also, knowing the history of Brian, there may never be another BB album with him contributing...and while I sort of like his solo stuff, I think it lacks something that the Beach Boys as a whole could produce, even without the other Wilson brothers. Just my opinion.
As an aside, I haven't even heard the album and have no idea if it's like the old stuff although that's what I've read.

Another opinion... If Stevie had been managed better and had been promoted well from the beginning I think we would have had at the very least an album inbetween TISL and IYD as well as some better material in general. Heaven knows that a bazillion of her demo's are better than some of the stuff that was released. I don't understand why she allowed herself to be almost sequestered after the first couple solo albums, unless it had something to do with her health, or the drug thing... who knows.

Actually, in addition, despite Stevie being stricken with pneumonia and having to cancel 1st week TV appearances (Today Show) & live appearances and interviews, IYD still sold over 52K copies in it's 1st week of release & debuted at #6 on Billboards Album Chart. Stevie did quite well. Just her and her little solo career.

Brian Wilson returning to a Beach Boys studio album after so many years is kind of a big deal to their fans.Whether you like them or not it cannot be denied that from a historical perspective the Beach Boys were far more influential than Fleetwood Mac..just ask Lindsey Buckingham.Of course they have also done even more to cheapen their brand than Mick Fleetwood ever dreamed of.

That's right, and there was a lot of competition the week IYD was released. The 52K that Stevie sold in her first week would have been enough to land her at No. 3 or 4 on the chart from a couple of weeks ago.

My sister was a big fan of QVC.Every time I went over her house .She had it on.I like the Beach Boys.I did not know John Stamos is involved with the Beach Boys.It would be great If Stevie showed up on QVC to sell some IYD cd's.

QVC was a client at the last company I worked at.They were preeks because if they dont sell the product. They will ship it back to us and get refunded.

WildHearted 06-11-2012 08:39 PM

I went to a Beach Boys concert 5 or 6 years ago that John Stamos was a part of. All I remember is security having to get someone off stage who had come up and grabbed him or something.

Carry on.

I want to respectfully say that you seem more than a little obsessed with Stevie's sales numbers. What kind of response are you looking for, that you haven't already gotten in the half dozen other threads you've started on this topic?

I think the record did pretty well for her. No one expects her to sell much. I surely didn't. A top ten debut is great for an artist of her age.

As usual the promotion was a half assed disaster. Her management and label are uniformly idiots across the board, and all of her fans know it. Not only are they out of touch with how to promote a record in the modern age, they seem to have forgotten the basics of record promotion, period. The singles were wrong. The videos weren't ready before the release. It was all backwards. If you told me her label actually did everything in their power to prevent it from selling well, I would believe it. I have no idea who bankrolled Dave Stewart's filming, but why invest any money at all in such a venture if it weren't going to be used as a promotional tool? It is laughable. Seriously.

I think it is great for them to have as a historical document, but if it wasn't planned to even turn into a promo vehicle, why bother? It looks like they used some of the footage in the Secret Love and Moonlight videos, but those videos were just this side of unwatchable. I respect Dave Stewart greatly. As a musician and a producer. But those rapid edits made my head hurt. He has all these gorgeous images of a stunning woman, and the edits are so rapid you never get a chance to even focus on her. They are liked meth induced fever dreams. What a waste. Who knows the machinations of why those well laid plans never panned out, but if I was him I would be utterly disgusted by the end result of all that filming and work. It is a year later and if that thing ever sees the light of day it will be a footnote. My criticisms of his editing aside, it was an utter waste of time and money.

As we have come to expect, the people in charge of the business side of Stevie's career are a FAIL. Pity that it gutted what appeared with the 'sizzle reel' to be her first foray into a truly multi media roll out and fully realized vision of what I consider to be a truly great record.

Okay, rant done.

The sales thing is such a stupid thing to dwell on. The reality is unless she does a cross generational or cross format pony trick, she won't ever sell a ton of records again. Who cares? It isn't like she needs the money. She made a great record. It got excellent reviews. She loves how it turned out. So does every lifelong fan that I know. That is plenty. And way more than I expected.

I think he would have if he could have gotten away with it.

And even though I'm too lazy to quote Sparky's post, I have to agree that the whole process was bassackwards. The "music business" does nothing but complain about how they make no money and blablabla, but they don't seem to do much when the dollar is sitting right in front of them.
I say screw them all together. If I were an artist with a vault full of music that people continue to buy, sell, trade, download, whatever... I'd go pay Ken Caillat or some other vintage engineer/producer and some studio musicians to polish them up a little and then sell them myself on Amazon or something.
If she did that would any of you buy them??? I know I would.
