Tarrytown

Ok..first the basics. No change to set list…check, black leather...check....small machine/big machine...check.

CAD and BTLH...first time I heard both of them live in person. Yes, yes, that is true. I loved CAD as the opener because it completely commanded the entire audience. And BTLH was great...def lots of people in the crowd loved it.

NTL was great...may have been the first time I heard that live too. I was never a big fan of that song, but I have to say listening and watching him perform that live may have sold me otherwise.

Stephanie…when I found out he was playing this song on this tour I just squeeed with glee. I savored every moment of that and enjoyed watching him get lost in the song. Since I’ve watched that on you tube a hundred times, I knew how every second of that song played out but...still hearing it live, in the flesh was just worth the price of admission to me.

Oh let me say that there was this guy on the right side of the theater that yelled out the names of the songs just before Lindsey would start playing. At first I thought it was cute cause he also yelled out RAB, and Lindsey was reacting to it, but then I got annoyed because it seemed to just throw off the excitement of the start of each song. Eventually he stopped or I just stopped noticing.

Ok, next...Come. Again, first time live in person for me. At the beginning of my fandom I was not a fan of the song, but just like any other seasoned fan, this song moves high on the list after awhile. He really got into this and I got lost just watching him become one with the guitar.

I don't remember anything great about SUD except of course it was so quiet at the end you could hear a pin drop. It was during Go Insane that I first started noticing the visible dripping sweat. I have to admit I started watching his neck glisten and wondered like everyone else why he insists on the jacket for the whole show. And thought go back to the white SYW shirt!

NGBA...honestly I’m bored with it. I've heard this at every show with Lindsey since 2009. Of course I enjoy anything he plays, but I’m the one dialing in my reaction. It's just the same every single time. Funny though right at the beginning of the song, a woman in front of me went to move her jacket or whatever and a bunch of change fell on the floor. OOPS!! Lindsey didn't notice, but everyone around did. Like SUD, you could hear a pin drop throughout.

BL…I absolutely get mesmerized watching his fingers and watching him belt out this song. But I absolutely want to gag at having to hear the intro again. Like NGBA just bored of it...I get that it's a meaningful song, but not only is it the same content, it's practically the same word for word spiel. And I’ve only been in this since 2009.

ISA…to me this is Lindsey getting off on stage. If I were some weird contemporary essay writer, I’d right some comparison of how this song mimics well you know. I mean he just loses himself in it, puts every ounce of himself into it till he just is spent. I watched Lindsey bop, jump, rock, (insert verb of choice) on the stage and he just plays on and on. I sat there bobbing the whole time anticipating one or two notes ahead since i know that performance by heart. He got a huge standing O for that. And yes he got many last night.

GYOW…was so disappointed. NO ONE went to the stage. Not only that, NO ONE stood up except for two people in the corner. I just didn't want to draw attention to myself as the only person to do it so i just sat there pissed. I kept waiting for someone, anyone to do it and i would have. But no...and i could tell Linds felt like wtf...he didn’t' go on and on with the song at the end...wrapped it up kinda quick. I felt horrible. If you didn’t know that people go to the stage, you’d never know anything was off but I knew.

Of course the second he goes offstage after GYOW, I notice security walk over to the front row and I bolted (I was in the 3rd row) and luckily I got a spot at the stage. During the short wait for him to come back out, I talked to aforementioned dropped change girl and we both were frustrated with ourselves for not making more of an effort for GYOW. Coulda woulda shoulda. So he comes out and does Trouble and of course it's awesome and people up front are singing. Followed by SWS. I yelled out RAB and said c’mon it's a sat night when he said he had to go, but got no reaction.

During the very end of SWS he noticed the girl next to me (ok she was blond and I’m under the impression that brunettes like me are definitely not catching the attention that those of the lighter hair persuasion) and came over to shake her hands. He started moving to his left and shook another hand or two but then he looked back over and I reached my hand out, maybe yelled out something i think, I can‘t remember...and reached he came back over to shake it (YAY!!) and...he got one or two more people and that was it. So i was ecstatic that he came back over and I got one of the very few he gave out.

Of course he was very gracious and did his whole thank you/pound on his heart thing throughout and commented on us being enthusiastic and a great audience. He got a lot of reaction throughout the show and definitely fed off it. Only thing i would have changed was GYOW.

It was a great night and now I’m trying to figure out how to make another show happen.

i feel very similarly about NTL - i was not happy when i first heard it was in the set - the only song i wished it wasn't - and i was hoping against hope he might take it out. but then i heard it - and the way this solo version sounds to my ears is just right - all the parts that i disliked about the regular version (eg crooning harmonies in the chorus) are gone, and you have just pure stripped down emotional song with a lot of intricate guitar parts on display. i loved hearing it in concert and i'm glad it's in the set.

that happened at one of the shows in Cali (Redding) and i hated it. it was a great show and audience loved every bit of it, but nobody went to the stage during GYOW. i was sitting same as you, just fidgeting in my 4th row seat and looking around for somebody, anybody, i could pull up... it just felt so wrong. you gotta move to that song, you can't be just sitting there! so after he went out all of the sudden bunch of us went to the stage and by the time he was back for Trouble everybody was at the stage. that made up for it, but still... just felt so awkward.

Great review Amlyn. I liked NGBA better this time than I have in the past, but I understand what you mean.

I am a registered sitter, so sitting through GYOW suits me just fine. But I do know that if there is anyone brave enough to just stand then there are dozens of people who are thinking exactly what you are thinking and they will follow your lead. You will only be alone for about 2 minutes, then other people will approach the stage. So, don't be afraid to go for it and Lindsey might even say something if security starts to deter you, especially when we're at the end and it's GYOW already.

Okay, a little background. I hurt my foot about a month ago...and just got the green light to wear "just" an ankle brace/cane thing. Which was fine but...holy hell! Got off the train at Tarrytown and the "five minute" walk to the theater involved walking up a hill the likes of which I haven't seen since San Francisco 1986. And I'm not even sure I saw a hill like that there, either.
I got to the theater about an hour early and drenched in sweat (the humidity was probably the standard NY-190%) How Lindsey does it every night is beyond me. And, for him, it's partially a choice because of the Leather Jacket.
Anyway, I was standing around, then went in and absolutely basked in the air conditioning. It was a very old theater and I remember (a few years back--also for a Lindsey tour) bitching about the Orpheum in Boston because I felt it really was beyond "landmark" and learning toward "demolish NOW!" and I was debating if the Tarrytown was that far gone. It's not...but, it's leaning in the rustic category for every place except the actual auditorium, which was pretty nice (if worn, in some spots).
I had front row center aisle, so I was a happy camper (and determined to make the show, in spite of foot issues). So, out he comes and...immediately the "I am touched, humbled, a genius" hand to the chest thing happens and...herein lies the issue with audience participation, IMO. The first solo tour a few years back (first solo-post the Dance, I should say)...was a free for all. After the first few shows, you were absolutely encouraged to go to the stage early and stay there. Second, he was a bit more serious and wanted people to listen to the first section, at least, so...there were signs along the way (and instructions with security, I'd imagine) that told you to keep your ass in the seat until you were to join in. And a lot of the welcoming cues came from Brett. I remember security sending me and a friend back at the Borgata when he was playing (I think we were in the front row but they didn't want us leaning on the stage). Brett, at one point, just gestured for us to come on up...that it was okay at that point. Here, there is no one to do that. And, I think Lindsey wants it that way for most of the show. I think, however, that GYOW is your cue to go up there, but--at that point, we are so used to staying in our seats and listening to the master musician (in awe and wonder) that it's not a comfortable thing.
Don't get me wrong. He is a musical genius and deserves the respect and accolades. But, with it, comes a distance--that he chooses to breach most of the time, but--on this tour, I'm feeling that he's not choosing it as much as he has in the past.
I will say this--post-GYOW, when he went backstage for a moment before the encore--security came up and told us to go to the stage, if we want. I had never seen that at any other concert.
Anyway, I kept thinking on the way home that he may be taking the alleged first version of "looking out for love" [insert flattened palm, hand stop-signal here] to a new level and with a new target.
All that aside, I did stand in a few spots. The front row was not standing at all until I did it a few times. I started with Go Insane and then continued for the rest of the night, leaving only one song, un-stood. (and, yup, I think I was one of the two standing for GYOW).
The sound machine I was going on about during the BB King thing, for the most part, sounded better in the larger venue. I still really disliked it for GYOW--and hate the sped-up version of it. Sounds like he's ready to catch a bus.
Stephanie--is just a wonder. I've thought about this from the first time I heard it on BN...but, it's particularly interesting in concert. It shows the same complexity that is part and parcel of Lindsey...but, there is this wonderous innocence about the music, that is not really a signature of his later work. It's just beautiful and, as much as I prefer Lindsey with his medium-small machine, I felt priviledged to see this live.
I really like Shut us Down live. Not sure why but I really do. I don't like it on the recorded version at all.
And, it's almost embarrassing to realize that I know every single note the man will play (and if he deviates from anything...we all know it).
Random notes: there was a bead of sweat on his eyelashes during GYOW that I just kept watching to see when it would drop. I don't think it ever did! Not till he wiped it away with his towel.
Also, I'm not sure he knew which city he was playing in. You know how he says "NY--you were great...thank you for coming." Well, he didn't say it. Just left the city out, and at the beginning just said he was glad to be there "in this beautiful part of the country, in this beautiful old theater."
The guy who Amlyn was talking about was actually pretty young. He came up to stand to the left of me by the stage. I was actually going to ask him if he was a Ledgie but thought...nah. I won't. I would say he was probably under 20. Lindsey seemed to get a big kick out of him. He said something like "Rock Away Blind, Lindsey. It's now or never!" and Lindsey said "don't say it like that..." It was interesting that he shook one side of the stage's hands, and ignored our side completely. It was fine by me but I wondered if the young man eventually did tick him off. Or, Lindsey maybe could have been running for a bus.
Speaking of which...walking DOWN that hill was quick but, I had to brace myself not to roll my fat ass down there...and then go up and across the little bridge to make the 9:41 train, ONLY to find out...it was running five minutes late and I didn't need to do all that running. I bought a soda, wiped away my sweat for the 900th time that night, and once again thought of Lindsey's Leather Jacket.
No doubt about it. He's into self-punishment.

to try to shed some clarity on this - we were told in no uncertain terms while in Cali that on this tour SECURITY IN EVERY VENUE HAS INSTRUCTIONS TO LET PEOPLE TO THE STAGE if people want to go. i heard a comment at one venue when ISA (and then a bit more during GYOW) was the first song people started sloooowly trickling towards the stage "took them long enough".

Del and Viv can correct me if i misunderstood any of what i stated above.

Lindsey himself will of course tell you that it's all good with him, and that he loves it either way (but that's just diplomacy talk imo ;)).

:lol::lol::lol::lol: he is - because nobody is standing up and dancing and guitar strumming!!!!!

(see Amlyn's post - i'm very sure she got it exactly right why he hurried up through GYOW - and why he doesn't at most shows where people are standing and asking to strum his guitar.)

Regina 06-10-2012 02:14 PM

I wasn't saying that there were any security instruction this tour. I'm talking about the last tour (or maybe the one before that...I lose track). Yes, the one-pre-Seeds (GoS, I guess?)
It's more a feeling now. Or, maybe I'm reading too much into it.
When he comes out, the vibe (to me, YMMV, IMO, etc) is different. It's not welcoming you to a party. It's more a gracing you with his presence type of thing. And, he has earned that right. I'm not dissing it. I've partied (so to speak) with Lindsey at these concerts and had a blast. I can do the more recital-esque performances. I just notice the change on this tour.
It may totally not be his intention but there is no one to lighten him up. And, I'm actually not that sure that he's feeling this tour as much as he has with others. As a rabid fan (not sure casual fans would notice at all), I am not feeling this one as much. Moments...yes. Entire concert...no. And, I will put in the disclaimer that I don't physically feel great and maybe that's coloring my opinions but...I doubt it;-)
Oh--one more thing--the Tarrytown crowd, seated or not seated--approaching the stage or not--were EXTREMELY responsive. They really were very vocal in their love for Lindsey--so, I'm sure he was feeling the love, in spite of the physical stuff or lack thereof.

yeah i understand that, you were expressing your feelings and speculating.

what i am saying is that there are security instructions this tour - and these are "let people go to the stage if they want to". i'm assuming that may be b/c last fall there were no clear instructions and it was left to the venues to decide what they wanted to do - which in at least a couple of instances resulted in Lindsey fighting with security from the stage (see Shelton reviews and vids).

PS Regina, i didn't say it above (in a rush to get the message across ) - definitely very grateful that you are sharing with us your reviews and insights - always interesting read and perspectives!:):wavey:

michelej1 06-10-2012 11:30 PM

As always Regina, you're very funny.

Lindsey's modesty is entertaining and I always like it when I read a journalist's review saying how humble he is. When he was with Little Big Town and they kept bowing and praising him I could just hear him saying to himself, "Yes, they are right. I am a god, actually."

What I like is reading stuff about the past, not only 1975, but even from Fritz. It sounds like he had the same confidence even back then. When John encountered it he balked. But Lindsey's ego didn't write a check his fingers couldn't pay -- or play. The man obviously knew his own potential, right from the start. Give in young John, and you'll be rolling in the deep.

Michele
